'Barbie' Director Greta Gerwig Making Multiple 'Chronicles of Narnia' Movies at Netflix

The visionary writer/director behind 'Lady Bird' and 'Little Women' is on board to reboot 'Narnia' for the streamer.

Greta Gerwig's reign is set to continue.

The director of Barbie, Little Women, and Lady Bird is putting together a Chronicles of Narnia reboot for Netflix, the Hollywood Reporter writes. A New Yorker feature, meanwhile, says the three-time Oscar-nominee signed on "to write and direct at least two films."

Gerwig has not made an official announcement about her involvement. Netflix acquired rights to the 1950s YA books in 2018. CEO Ted Sarandos stated, "Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we're thrilled to be their home for years to come."

The streaming service has not announced anything major with the IP since then.

Disney had the rights to author C.S. Lewis' series prior to Netflix, releasing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

As for Greta's highly anticipated Barbie, as it gears up for its opening weekend it's projected to make $80 million to $100 million, per Deadline.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the writer/director spoke about why she insisted on working on Barbie. "I started from this idea of Barbieland, this place with no death, no aging, no decay, no pain, no shame," she said. "We know the story. We've heard this story. This is an old story. It's in a lot of religious literature. What happens to that person? They have to leave. And they have to confront all the things that were shielded from them in this place."
