Grey’s Anatomy has officially been picked up for another season, extending its run past 20 years on ABC.

According to a Deadline report from March 30, the upcoming season of Shonda Rhimes’ series will feature several recurring members from the original ensemble cast, including Ellen Pompeo. However, two key members — Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver — are set to exit the show following Season 22.

Despite McKidd and Raver exiting the show, series creator Rhimes says there will be a satisfying ending for their characters in the season 22 finale, set to air May 7, 2026. Of the characters’ fate, she said, “Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other.” Rhimes continued, saying, “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”

Additionally, the upcoming season may have fewer than the usual 18 episodes, reportedly due to budget considerations. While loyal fans of the series are thrilled for a new set of episodes after season 22, others believe the medical show should have wrapped up years ago.

But according to Pompeo, one of the major reasons she continues to star on the series is because of the “financial security” as opposed to “critical acclaim.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2025, she said, "I didn't crave that kind of recognition,” referring to the acclaim. “I craved the sort of financial and job security situation more that I did critical accolades — that's why I stayed on the show."

Season 23 of the long-running ABC series has been confirmed for the 2026–2027 season, though an official premiere date has not been announced.
