The Comeback, starring Lisa Kudrow, has garnered a small but mighty cult following since its HBO debut in 2005. The series was canceled after its first season in the early aughts, yet after years of fans begging for more of Valerie Cherish, The Comeback was picked up again for season 2 in 2013.
Now, a whopping 12 years later, the show is back for its third and final season. As for the premiere episode of season 3, reactions from fans are mixed.
What Are Fans Saying About ‘The Comeback’ Season 3?
Following the critically acclaimed second season of The Comeback, which left fans teary-eyed and triumphant following Valerie’s major character development in the season’s finale, audiences were ecstatic to learn the show would be returning for a surprise third season.
Of course, expectations were through the roof, since season 2 of Kudrow and Michael Patrick King’s series ended on such a high note. And while some fans showed nothing but praise for the season 3 premiere, clapping for the Friends star’s ability to effortlessly transform back into her role of the image-obsessed TV star, others found the episode rather underwhelming.
Several viewers took to Reddit to discuss their thoughts.
“The writing was…a bit meh,” one person commented. However, they believe the series will likely pick up once more episodes drop. “Hopefully with the second episode, it’s back to the cringe comedy we fans love from the first two seasons.”
Another agreed, saying the first episode wasn’t enough to get fans hooked. “I feel like this should have been a double episode premiere,” said a commenter. “It was a good start, but needed to see more to get the plot moving beyond just re-establishing where Valerie is now.”
“I didn't laugh even once, but I'm hoping the show picks up the pace soon,” another chimed in.
A separate commenter agreed, writing, “I didn't think it was too funny. Sort of an establishment episode. Loved hearing Magic at the end though.”
