The security protocols are in question at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand following a high-profile security breach involving the world-famous pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, on March 17. Thai authorities have confirmed that the man who scaled the protective barriers and walls to enter the animal enclosure has been arrested.

The incident immediately sparked concerns for the adorable viral sensation, and has the Zoo looking at what measures they can take to ensure the safety of their residents.

The intruder entered the enclosure in the evening, around 5 pm, ensuring no other visitors or staff were present during that time. According to reports made by NBC News, zoo staff and security acted within a minute or two, and the man did not attempt to run from the scene after police had been called.

It seems that the man wanted to get up close and personal with Moo Deng to take photos and videos via his tablet, which can be seen in the security footage. He was escorted safely away from the premises and taken into custody shortly after the breach was detected.

Moo Deng's Safety Called Into Question

Since Moo Deng became the viral sensation we know today, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo has been subject to massive crowd gatherings. In response to the latest breach on the celebrity hippo's humble abode, zoo officials have stated they are re-evaluating the current barriers in place and increasing security marshal presence that surrounds the pygmy hippo exhibit.

This is not the first time the zoo has had to take drastic measures to ensure the safety of Moo Deng. Previous reports indicated that guests have been caught throwing water, bananas, and shells at Moo Deng in an attempt to wake her up. These incidents led the zoo officials to install 24-hour surveillance cameras.

Autthapol “Benz” Nundee, Moo Deng’s keeper, shared a Facebook post stating, “Fortunately, he did not get bitten,” and warned that pygmy hippos are known for being very aggressive toward people they are not familiar with.

How Is Moo Deng Doing Now?

After the man breached the barriers, veterinary staff gave Moo Deng a thorough lookover to ensure that the man never made contact or harmed the baby hippo. It has been confirmed that Moo Deng was not harmed during the incident and remains in good health and spirits.

Police have charged the man with trespassing, but the investigation is still underway. He was released on bail since this took place.
