Olivia Dean is making her way to the top as the queen of the UK soul scene. At the 2026 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards, the London-born singer cleaned house, taking home some of the night’s biggest honors, including Best Female Act and the highly coveted and prestigious Album of the Year Award. The wins cement Deas as a generational talent who has undoubtedly transitioned from a festival fave to a pillar in the industry.
During her acceptance speech, Dean paid tribute to the late black feminist author Bell Hooks, dedicating her win to Hooks’ influential work and the community that inspires her art. Dean stated that the record was “born out of wanting to write something about love and what it means to me.” Dean’s live performance of “A Couple of Minutes” was nothing short of phenomenal and has been cited as the night’s standout moment.
The ceremony honors the best of the best in Black music and culture, and showcases some of the top global heavyweights in this industry. According to The Guardian, Raye, of course, continued her run by securing the Video of the Year for her hit “Where Is My Husband”, while Central Cee held his grip on the rap game by taking Best Male Act. These wins are both testaments to the artists’ dominance in the UK and growing footprint in the United States.
Beyond the normal mainstream categories, the 2026 MOBOs called attention to the diversity and technical depth of the current UK landscape. Ezra Collective came out on top with the Best Jazz Act award, following their Mercury Prize win and sold-out international tour. As reported by The Guardian, the soaring energy in the room reflects the UK music industry, which is more self-sufficient and competitive than ever before.
