In a move that is sending shockwaves throughout the gaming industry as a whole, Epic Games has just confirmed it is laying off over 1,000 employees. This revelation follows a reported downturn in Fortnite engagement, which is one of the company's most successful titles to date. The company has reported that they are spending “significantly more” on the title than it is currently raking in, leading to the massive layoffs.

CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, broke the news to his staff in a memo, explaining that these new “major cuts” are their final effort to keep the company afloat while steering toward a more stable financial structure. Sadly, this is not the first round of layoffs we have seen this year from major gaming companies, and it almost certainly will not be the last.

Back in 2023, Epic Games cut nearly 800 employees in an attempt to save the company, but it has proven that it just was not enough. This time around, the scale is much larger, and Sweeney states they are looking to slash around $500 million in costs by tightening up on marketing, contracting, and even closing their currently open positions at the company.

The Current “Fortnite Problem” at Hand

What exactly went wrong here with this industry giant? Sweeney alludes to a perfect storm that is being seen industry-wide right now. With the economy in the current state that its in, we see weaker consumer spending, less new-gen consoles flying off shelves, and slower growth overall.

But the core issue here seems to be Fortnite specifically. For several years now, Fortnite has been something of a cash cow for Epic Games, bringing in around $5.8 billion in revenue each year since 2018. As with most great things, they inevitably must come to an end, and the engagement dips, not to mention the massive overhead it takes to keep this well-oiled machine alive; the viability of the company has come into question.

Last week, Epic hiked the price of V-Bucks up to “help pay the bills”, a sign that things behind the scenes were rapidly degrading, which fans took notice of almost immediately. Sweeney did, however, go out of his way to mention that these layoffs had nothing to do with AI, and more because he is attempting to survive in an extreme market.

For every employee affected by this current layoff round, Epic will be offering them a severance package that includes at least four months of base pay and extensions of their healthcare coverage.

So, What’s Next for Epic Games?

There is a company wide meeting set for this coming Thursday to discuss a roadmap of what the next few quarters will look like for the company. Epic is trying to put on a brave face here, but it is more than crystal clear that the gaming industry as a whole is in a state of panic, upheaval, and chaos. While there have been a plethora of mass layoffs from big players over the years, this one hits a bit different, as Epic has almost seemed untouchable for quite some time.

The focus for Epic Games now is to reach “financial stability,” but with Fortnite slowly losing its luster and traction, and the cost of game development skyrocketing due to the current state of the US economy, the path forward could be much steeper than it might have been just a few short years ago.

We will be watching for updates on the meeting this Thursday, and will hold out hope that the gaming industry can remain afloat in such uncertain times.
