25 Special Edition Video Game Packages That Are Worth The Money

Just because you slap the word “special” on something doesn’t always make it so. McDonald’s Special Sauce? It’s basically mayo, French dressing, and relish. The Star Wars Holiday Special compared to other holiday specials from 1983, is pretty typical. But when it comes to video games, some special editions are actually very special. Whether they include a cool statue, some exclusive add-ons, or a remote control flying thingy, some companies go all out when putting together special editions of their games.

With the holidays fast approaching, we thought we’d tell you about twenty-five of the best special editions of games we’ve ever seen, including both new ones that have either just come out or will be out soon, as well as older ones for classic games that, for the most part, are still available on Amazon or eBay.*

In 2011's Catherine, a young man named Vincent begins to have surreal nightmares when his girlfriend, Katherine, starts talking to him about the idea of them getting married. Complicating matters further, Vinny then starts an affair with the titular Catherine, which just makes his nightmares even worse. And more puzzling, since Vincent's nightmares consist of a series of block puzzles, but with blocks that are man-sized. Which means he not only has to use his mind to figure them out, but his jumping and climbing skills as well.

Befitting this very odd (and very adult) game, Catherine "Love Is Over" Deluxe Edition also includes a pair of polka dot boxers like the ones worn by Vincent during his crazy nightmares, and a replica of the "Empty Hearts" t-shirt that Catherine wears in the game. But the weirdest thing this includes, which makes it the coolest, is a pillow case with Catherine's image, which can make your pillow look like the one Vinny carries in his nightmares.

Ever since Microsoft first introduced their Kinect motion camera controller in 2010, gamers have been hoping for a Star Wars lightsaber game. But while 2012's Kinect Star Wars wasn't that game, it did have some cool aspects, most notably the minigame where you're a Rancor and get to go all Godzilla on Mos Eisley, Naboo, and Felucia.

Even if you never play Kinect Star Wars, though, no self-respecting Star Wars fan could resist the Xbox 360 Limited Edition Kinect Star Wars Bundle, which came with an exclusive version of the system decorated to look like R2-D2 (well, R2-D2 if he was a transformer and had transformed himself into an Xbox 360). It even made R2-D2 sounds when you turned it on or opened the disc tray, and came with a controller made to resemble R2-D2's BFF C-3PO, in that was gold and looked like it had exposed wires. As if that wasn't enough, it also included a white Kinect sensor, a matching wired headset and mic, and, for reasons that aren't clear, a copy of the decidedly un-Star Wars-y game Kinect Adventures.

In this story, we've highlighted special editions that give you things you couldn't get anywhere else, such as action figures, t-shirts, and soundtrack CDs. But while the extras in the special edition of Madden are things you could get elsewhere, you can't get them this cheap.

Along with the newest edition of the pigskin classic, Madden NFL 25 Anniversary Edition also includes a code to unlock a free year of NFL Sunday Ticket, which will let you watch every regular Sunday game of the regular season on your computer, tablet, or phone, regardless of where you live. In addition, if you don't have DirectTV but can access their service, you also get a promo code with $10.00 off each month for the first year, as well as a year free of NFL Sunday Ticket Max. All of which would normally cost you over $400.00, or $320.01 more than you're paying for this game. Or rather, it would've, had this version of the game not sold out faster than you can say, "What! That was totally a fair hit! That ref is blind. Man, I need a beer. Anyone else want one?"

When it came out at the end of 2011, the epic and action-packed adventure The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim instantly became one of that year's best games (that it has a Game of Thrones-like sense of realism didn't hurt). But it also got some gamers wishing they could go back and play the four previous installments of this long-running adventure series.

Well, now Bethesda are making that easy. The Elder Scrolls Anthology not only includes all five games - 1994's The Elder Scrolls: Arena, 1996's The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, 2002's The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, 2006's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and, of course, Skyrim - but it also has all of the add-ons released for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, as well as physical maps of the lands known as Tamriel, Morrowind, Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and Iliac Bay. Though if you'd rather not kick it old school (or if you don't own a PC), you can just opt for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Legendary Edition, which has the titular game and of its three expansions: "Dawnguard," "Hearthfire," and "Dragonborn."

When it came out in 2010, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow showed that you could actually make a cool Castlevania game that wasn't just a retro 2D side-scroller...if you went 3D by making it a hack & slash action game along the lines of God of War or Devil May Cry. And you got the guy who oversees the Metal Gear Solid games to oversee this as well.

With a sequel, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, due out in February, Konami is rereleasing the original with a little tease of what to come. Besides the original game, the Castlevania: Lords of Shadows Collection also includes a demo of the sequel that lets you play as Dracula (insert evil laugh here). Also included are the two add-ons for the first Shadow - "Reverie'" and "Resurrection" - which expanded the story, as well as a download code for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate HD, which, ironically, is a retro-style 2D side-scroller that was originally made for the 360 and PS3, but only released on the 3DS until now.

Launched in 2003, the sci-fi MMO EVE Online —which is like World Of Warcraft in space—celebrated its tenth anniversary this past May. And in honor of that, they released this special edition of the game, which not only includes the original game but the spin-off Dust 514, a free-to-play first-person shooter for the PlayStation 3, as well.

Besides a copy of EVE, this anniversary collection also includes a 192 hardcover book called Into the Second Decade which details the creation of EVE up through the introduction of Dust 514, with numerous pictures and illustrations. This also has some exclusive in-game items for EVE, including a blueprint for the Gnosis Battlecruiser, as well as armor and weapons for Dust 514 that don't disappear when you die. It also include a scale model of the Minmater Rifter which doubles as a four-port USB hub (and comes with a stand and a USB cable), a soundtrack CD that was recorded earlier this year when the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra played the game's score at Fanfest 2013, and a "mystery code" which will unlock something in the future that hasn't been revealed yet. But the best part is that it also has a copy of Danger Game, a board game created by the people behind EVE that comes in its own collector's tin.

Based on the Madou Monogatari series, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God is a new Japanese action-oriented fantasy adventure game in which you play as Pupuru, a wannabe magician who gets kicked out of the local Hogwarts affiliate. But when she finds an old book of curry recipes that turn out to be magical, she decides to gather the necessary ingredients so she can use the spells to save the local curry shop.

Just typing that up made me confused, but it also made me hungry for Japanese curry, which is why I'm glad there's the Everything Nicey Limited Edition of Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God. Besides the game, this edition of the game also includes a plate - er, "Kuu-rry Plate" - that has an image of the character Kuu eating curry, a "Kuu-rry Spoon" that has the same character on the end, and a bib decorated with pictures of the game's crazy characters. None of which I'll be taking with me when I go to Go Go Curry tonight for dinner.

Is there anything Batman can't do? He fights crime, he solves mysteries, and he inspires great superhero video games, such as the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum and 2012's Batman: Arkham City. Which is why it's no surprise he's inspired some great special editions of those games, including the City one ($100) that had a Batman statue and other cool extras, and the Origin one ($250), which includes a Joker statue, a Blu-ray of the super villain documentary Necessary Evil, a copy of the soundtrack CD, and some add-ons for the game.

But the coolest is still the Batman: Arkham Asylum: Special Edition, which includes a 14-inches long Batarang that comes with its own stand. Okay, so it's attached to the stand, but still, if you flung it at someone, it would hurt like hell. In addition, this also comes with an exclusive challenge map, a making-of DVD, and a forty-eight page leather bound book with details on all the bad guys in the game.

For most of the special editions we're highlight in this piece, the "special" part refers to a cool statue, or a toy, or, in one case, a spoon. But what makes the Limited Edition version of the new driving game Forza Motorsport 5 so cool is that it has tons of stuff you can actually use in the game.

Limited to a 169,000 copies worldwide, the Forza Motorsport 5: Limited Edition gives you 1250 car tokens, which you can use to buy any car in the game, and access to exclusive multiplayer events, plus it doubles your the experience points so you can unlock new cars faster. Not that you'll need it, since this also adds thirteen cars to the game's already impressive roster: 2010 Audi TT RS Coupe, 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, 2013 Ford Focus ST, 2011 Audi RS 3 Sportback, 2012 Aston Martin Vanquish, 2013 Shelby Mustang GT500, 2013 SRT Viper GTS, 2014 McLaren P1, 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, 1987 RUF CTR Yellowbird, 1991 Mazda #55 787B, 2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, and 2011 Ford F150 SVT Raptor.

Like a lot of Japanese role-playing games that make it to America (and a lot that get snuck in under cover of night), 2011's Tales Of Xillia became an immediate cult hit when the game finally came out in the U.S. this past summer. So it should come as no surprise that, when it did, it came with a special edition so cool that the game's Japanese fans probably tried to sneak them into Japan.

Besides the game, the Collector's Edition of Tales of Xillia also includes a limited edition statue of series star Milla Maxwell, complete with her sword, as well as a self-explanatory, book called The Art of Tales of Xillia. It also has a soundtrack CD, though for some reason, it doesn't have the entire score, just select tracks (though maybe it can't all fit on one disc). Regardless, all of this good stuff does set a dangerous precedent for the people at Namco Bandai, who now have to find a way to top this when Tales of Xillia 2 comes to the U.S. next year.

It's one of those things that's such a simple, seductive idea that you kick yourself for not thinking of it first: fighting tops. But Beyblade takes this idea to the nth degree by creating a whole back-story told in cartoon form, which then inspires a series of games, of which this is the latest.

Fittingly, it comes to America with a special edition that will appeal to both fans of the Beyblade video games and the home version as well. Besides the new 3DS game, which let's you customize your own battle top, it also includes a playable version of the "Samurai Ifrit W145CF", as well as an card that, when you scan it with your 3DS' camera, unlocks six in-game arenas, as well as a seventh you can play against a friend or the computer in full 3D. But the coolest thing about the Beyblade: Evolution: Collector's Edition is that it also comes with an exclusive top called the Wing Pegasus 90WF, which is only available in America through this special edition. Granted, you could also fly to Japan to get one, but that would cost more than $40.

Like the original, the second Payday is a first-person shooter in which and your online friends (i.e., some people you just met in the game's lobby) play as heavy armed bank robbers who've clearly watched the movie Heat way too many times. Which explains why the Collector's Edition is full of stuff you could easily toss out the window of a speeding car when the cops are closing in.

Along with the game, the Payday 2: Collector's Edition also comes with a soundtrack CD, a pair of rubber gloves (so you don't leave any fingerprints behind), and a wallet made of Tyvek, a fabric made by Dupont that's used in some light HAZMAT suits. But the kicker is that this edition also comes with a rubber mask like the one Dallas wears in the game. He's the patriotic one, by the way. Because breaking a country's laws doesn't mean you stop loving your country, too.

Before it came out this summer, The Last Of Us was one of the most anticipated games of the year. Which is undoubtedly why Sony put out not one but two different special editions of the game.

Thankfully, you don't need to get both to get all the cool stuff. Besides the game, both versions have the first issue of the comic book The Last Of Us: American Dreams that has a different cover than the one sold in stores, some stickers, and the "Sights & Sounds" DLC pack, which includes the game's soundtrack, some PSN avatars, and a theme for your PS3's desktop. But while the Survival Edition has a 170-page hardcover art book called The Art Of The Last Of Us, it's replaced in the Post-Pandemic Edition by a 12-inch tall statue of the game's heroes, Joel and Ellie, as well as the "Survival DLC Pack," which gives you bonuses for the game's multiplayer modes. Thankfully, you don't have to go all Sophie's Choice, since the book, statue, and DLC are all now available on their own as well.

Anyone can play a fighting game with a regular controller. But true masters know you have to play them on a fight stick. And no one makes better fight stick controllers than Hori, the Japanese accessory company who've made them for such fighting games as 2012's Dead or Alive 5, 2011's Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, and 2012's Soulcalibur V, as well as non-game-specific ones like their upcoming PlayStation 3 Real Arcade Pro, N3-SA, which comes out November 8.

Which is why this Limited Edition version of 2009's Tekken 6 is so special; it includes an exclusive Hori fight stick decorated with characters from this fighting game (though it's also why it's hard to find). Best of all, the controller is wireless, so you don't have to worry about knocking anything over when you jump up to yell, "Knocked you out, mom! I knocked you out!" Along with the controller, and a copy of the game (naturally), the Tekken 6: Limited Edition also includes a collectible art book with character sketches and other interesting imagery.

As anyone who's played it will tell you, Saints Row IV is one of the most over-the-top games ever made. This year. So it's fitting that it would also have one of the most over-the-top special editions every made. Ever. Included it in are a ticket to a flight on Virgin Galactic, plastic surgery, a Lamborghini Gallardo (a real one), a Toyota Prius (also real) with insurance, a bunch of cool clothes, a two week trip to Washington DC and Dubai that includes hotel and first-class flights, a full-sized replica of the Dubstep Gun, and a faux kidnapping. Oh, and a copy of the game.

If that's too much for you, though, you can just get the Super Dangerous Wub Wub Edition which, for $100, gives you the game, a 12-inch replica of the Dubstep Gun, a Johnny Gat Memorial Statue, a Dubstep Doomsday Button, and in-game items that include an Uncle Sam suit, the Screaming Eagle plane, the 'merica weapon, and a unique suit with matching tie.

With an engrossing story that encompasses solo missions, multiplayer modes and co-op missions, all of which work together to tell a single story, the new Splinter Cell is not only a return-to-form for this sneaky action series, but one of the better games of the year. So it's only fitting that it would also get one of the cooler special editions of the year as well.

Besides the game, this includes a remote-controlled C-147B Paladin airplane that looks like the one you use in the game as a mobile command center. Not only does the plane have a wingspan over 25-inches, a top speed of thirty-five miles per hour, and a range of 250 feet, but its remote is designed to look like the goggles series star Sam Fisher wears in the game. As if that wasn't enough, this special edition also includes two additional co-op missions, a cool new in-game suit and goggles, a limited edition Sam Fisher poster, and a Splinter Cell graphic novel by writer Nathan Edmonson (Who Is Jake Ellis?) and illustrator Marc Laming (Scars & Stripes).

In the realistic, real-time strategy war game Total War: Rome II, you have to use real-life tactics and strategy, as well as resource management, if you want your forces to survive, let along emerge victorious. So it makes perfect sense that the Collector's Edition of this game - which was limited to 22,000 worldwide and is now hard but not impossible to find - would include a card game and model catapult.

Well, maybe it doesn't make sense, but it does show that the people who made it have a sense of humor about their otherwise serious war game. Besides the scale model of a catapult - sorry, a Roman Onager (which you have to assemble) - and a canvas campaign map, this edition also has the aforementioned card game, called Punic Wars, which was made by the people who made this game. And if that isn't enough non-electric fun for you, the box can also be used, along with the included replica Roman dice and roundels, to play a real Roman-era board game called tabula, which was a predecessor to Backgammon.

Given how much comic book fans love collecting things and limited editions and whatnot, it was inevitable that this fighting game - which has different versions of Batman, Superman, and other DC Comics characters smacking the bejezus out of each other, Mortal Kombat-style - would have it's own limited, Collector's Edition.

Besides the game on your system of choice, this also has an exclusive statue that depicts Wonder Woman about to brain Batman with the spaceship that brought a young Superman to Earth, as well as a code for a download of the animated movie Justice League: Doom, and a second download code for three exclusive skins of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman that gives them their new outfits. But the pièce de résistance, for comic book fans, is that this also includes a special edition of the first issue of the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book - which was written by Tom Taylor (Star Wars: Darth Maul: Death Sentence) and drawn by Jheremy Raapack, Mike S. Miller, Bruno Redondo, David Yardin, and Tom Derenick - that was unavailable anywhere else. And was thus a true collector's item.

Though it was not the last game in the series, 2011's Gears Of War 3 was the end of the story for this sci-fi saga. Which is why this game didn't go out with a whimper, but with a bang. Well, two of them, actually.

In the Limited Edition, you not only got the game, but a replica of the heavy metal Octus Service Medal given to Dr. Adam Fenix (the father of Gears hero Marcus Fenix) in a nice display box, a fabric COG flag, a playable version of Dr. Fenix for the multiplayer modes, and a collection of the Doctor's personal effects that includes his Will, schematics for the Hammer Of Dawn, and family mementos. But if you get the Epic Edition, you get all of that plus a detailed statue of Marcus, a 96-page hardcover art book called The Art and Design of Gears of War, and a collection of skins that make such weapons as The Lancer, The Retro Lancer, The Gnasher Shotgun, The Sawed-Off Shotgun, and The Hammerburst all look extra pretty when you play online.

While it wasn't as epic a journey as its predecessor, and wasn't as cool as the Chloe spin-off I keep telling Naughty Dog they should make, 2011's Uncharted 3 was still the kind of adventure Indiana Jones wishes he was still young enough to go on.

What's interesting is how, unlike so many similar special editions, the Collector's Edition of Uncharted 3 lets you bring a little piece of the game's hero, Nathan Drake, so close to your heart. And your crotch. As you'd expect, this C.E. includes a copy of the game, and is housed in a nice package that looks like one of the heavy wooden chests in the game. But it also has wearable replicas of Drake's necklace complete with the ring previously owned by his ancestor, Sir Francis Drake, and Drake's horse shoe belt buckle, which keeps his pants from falling down when he's running away from bad guys. You can even see how he wears them with the included statue of Mr. Drake, which was made by the artisans at Sideshow Collectibles. Now if it just came with Chloe's phone number...

Before it was one of the best games of the year, BioShock: Infinite was one of the most anticipated games of the year. Which is why it got one of the more elaborate special editions...of the year.

The centerpiece of the BioShock Infinite: Ultimate Songbird Edition is, of course, the Songbird Statue, a 9.75-inch tall resin replica designed by one of the game's concept artists, Robb Waters, whose work also appears in The Art of BioShock Infinite, a 64-page miniature version of the hardcover art book of the same name put out by Dark Horse. Also included are a lithograph of the advert for the vigor Devil's Kiss, a 25-mm tall Handyman figurine, which can be used in the board game BioShock Infinite: The Siege of Columbia (which is oddly not included), and 3-inch key chain in the shape of the Murder of Crows bottle. The three editions also include a download of the soundtrack and a trio of exclusive power-ups, with the PS3 edition also getting a unique desktop theme, and the 360 getting avatar costumes of Booker and Elizabeth.

Given how you spend half the game picking stuff up (and the other half shooting things, driving around, and laughing at the silly robot), it makes sense that the special edition of last year's Borderlands 2 would be packed full of fun stuff. And that it would've sold out faster than you can say "Borderlands 2 Ultimate Loot Chest Limited Edition."

If you were able to get one - or if you decide to spring for one of the stupidly over-priced versions available from people via Amazon - you'd not only get a copy of the game, but life-sized a replica of a loot chest, a bobblehead of Marcus Kincaid that comes in a replica of his vending machine, four postcards, four stickers, a hardcover booked called Inside the Vault: The Art of Borderlands 2, field notes from Sir Hammerlock, a chart identifying different creatures from the game, a numbered certificate of authenticity, and codes that gave you a free comic, a collection of unique weapons, a rare item, and a fifth playable character called The Mechromancer.

Like every installment since 2009's Modern Warfare 2, this year's Call of Duty, subtitled Ghosts, will be available in regular and extra crispy. And, like every special edition they've done, the Call of Duty: Ghost: Prestige Edition ($199.99) is pretty cool, as it include a 1080p tactical camera, a paracord strap, a bonus multiplayer map, a digital copy of the soundtrack, and a season pass that gives you the first four map packs when they come out.

But when it comes to special editions of CoD., the winner and still champion is last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops II: Care Package. Not only did it come in a replica of the care package you get in multiplayer, but it has a remote controlled version of the MQ-27 Dragonfire Drone. It also has a new version of the much-loved multiplayer map Nuketown, two limited edition coins, and a copy of the soundtrack which includes two versions of the theme by nine inch nails mastermind Trent Reznor.

Whenever Bethesda have an event or say they've got something to announce, gamers (myself included) wait with baited breath to see if they'll finally admit that they're making Fallout 4. But for those who just can't wait, you can still get, and play, the special edition of 2008's Fallout 3.

Besides a copy of the game on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC - which, for those who haven't played it, set the first-person shooting action and role-playing depth of Borderlands in a '50s post-apocalyptic sci-fi world - the Fallout 3 Collector's Edition also includes a 5-inch tall replica of the bobblehead you can find throughout the game, a Vault-Tec lunch box (which, thankfully, doesn't have an old sandwich or thermos full of 300 year old milk in it), a making-of DVD that includes interviews with the developers, and a copy of the hardcover book The Art of Fallout 3, which has previously unseen concept art as well as commentary from the artists who worked on the game. However, what you won't get are any of the expansions they added to the game after it came out, since this collection was released the same time as the regular version.

If rumors are to be believed, as they often are, the original version of the Halo 3: Legendary Edition was going to include a life-sized replica of the helmet worn by series star Master Chief. But idea this was supposedly nixed - again, according to rumor - by Microsoft's legal department, who feared that someone wearing it while riding a motorcycle would crash, and get badly hurt (since, of course, the helmet wasn't built to be used as a motorcycle helmet), and would then sue Microsoft. Which is exactly what would've happened.

Even so, it's pretty damn cool, even if it is so small, and filled in, that it won't even fit on your cat's head (which is good, since your car likes to ride motorcycles and file frivolous lawsuits). It even has a cool stand, so you can place it on your mantle like you were awarded it during the war with The Covenant. Oh, and if getting a cool-looking, legally-vetted helmet wasn't enough, the Legendary Edition also includes two discs of making-of documentaries, a tour of the studio where the game was made, and other fun stuff.
