Christmas 2017 has come and gone but before everyone can pack away their lights and trees for another year there is something that needs to be addressed. Is the Jordan Peele-directed, 2017 sensation Get Out a Christmas movie? According to Peele, that might be the case.

On Christmas Eve, Peele took to Twitter to stir the pot on this theory by responding to a fan posing the seemingly ridiculous question.

While he makes a compelling argument here, it is hard to put a film like Get Out that helped 2017 become a landmark year for horror films beside the likes of a Home Alone or Elf just because it features a few seasonal details like white-bearded men and deer. Get Out was praised for its satirical approach to important and relevant social commentary on the unfortunate reality for a lot of black people and minorities alike, but does that mean it cannot also be a Christmas film watched for years and years to come? Well, that remains a toss up.

This is not the first time Peele has attempted to categorize his debut film. After receiving nominations at the 2018 Golden Globes billed as a comedy, he said Get Out was actually a documentary, comments he would stand behind on an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert just days later.

With this latest revelation from Peele, Get Out is added to the never-ending “Christmas movie or not” debate alongside the likes of other popular choices like the Harry Potter series and the original Die Hard. Whether you support Peele’s claims or not, there is certainly nothing wrong with turning an important film like this one into your family’s newest Christmas tradition when Dec. 25, 2018 rolls around.
