'Black Mirror' May Start Making Sequels to Some Episodes

In the new companion book 'Inside Black Mirror,' creator Charlie Brooker discusses the possibility of future sequels for past episodes.

As if Black Mirror's "what-if" scenarios weren't thought-provoking and terrifying enough the first time around, episodes from the popular Netflix original might be getting sequels in the future.

Series creator Charlie Brooker discusses the possibility of revisiting past episodes in a new book titled Inside Black Mirror. One of the proposed sequels is for the 2013 episode "White Bear." The episode saw the character Victoria, played by Lenora Crichlow, relive the the punishment for being an accomplice to a child's murder. "Return to White Bear" would focus on Crichlow's character beginning to become aware of her never-ending loop of punishment.

"That was something we discussed at the time, as a potential expansion of the story," said Brooker. "What if she becomes aware that this is going on, and starts rebelling against it?"

Other sequels wouldn't fully revisit entire plots, but instead go back to a familiar world to tell a new story with different characters—like Season 3 favorite "San Junipero." "I wouldn't necessarily want to revisit those characters, because we're very happy with where they ended up and their story," he said. "But that's not to say that we couldn't revisit that world, if there was a compelling reason to do so."

Brooker also said that fans can expect to see more compilation episodes composed of several shorter stories like Season 4's "Black Museum."

"Sometimes, I've got an idea for a story and it's a hook...and it's like 15 minutes of story and I can't work out how to make that a bigger story," said the 47-year old. "'Black Museum,' or 'White Christmas'...I like to think of them as medleys."

The possibility of Black Mirror sequels follows up recent news that Netflix will be adding interactive elements to the sci-fi series' upcoming fifth season that will allow viewers to alter the outcome of the storyline as they watch. With all of this potential, hopefully the next season—expected for 2019 but also rumored for the end of this year—is premiering sooner rather than later.
