10 "Gran Turismo" Dream Cars We Wish Were Ours

Gran Turismo is, and always has been, all about the cars. PlayStation’s signature racing series is the go-to game for gearheads the world over, with its realistic physics, real-world tracks, and addictive race modes. But above all else in the series, the cars are what’s most important to fans.

Gran Turismo 6 finally hit shelves this month after a long three-year wait since GT5 came out, and that means the car-obsessed among us are about to disappear into our man caves for another few weeks. This series lets players live out their ultimate car fantasies, racing their dream rides all around the world, souping them up and ogling them to their hearts’ content.

That’s really what keeps Gran Turismo fans coming back. It’s car ecstasy, pure and simple. And with around 1,200 cars to choose from in GT6 alone, it will never get old for many players. That number has been growing since the beginning of the series, so naturally we’ve got some favorites from over the years. Here are 10 that we wish were in our garage—what Gran Turismo cars do you wish were in yours?

First appearance: Gran Turismo 6

There’s no way to know for sure which cars in Gran Turismo 6 will be the best until the game is out and there’s ample time to test them all out. But one thing is for sure: there’s not a person on earth who wouldn’t love to own a moon buggy.

The game’s lunar rover is modeled after the one that was used during the 1971 Apollo 15 mission by astronauts like Jim Irwin. Now, thanks to GT6, it can be used by dopes like us to race in circles. What we wouldn’t do for one of our very own!

First appearance: Gran Turismo 5

The Chevy Corvette C7 was one of the coolest cars to be released in a free DLC pack for Gran Turismo 5. That’s because its final design had yet to be revealed when the virtual vehicle was made available.

Chevrolet guarded the new Corvette’s design closely, even developing special custom camouflage to hide its every feature. And everyone loves forbidden fruit.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 5

This two-seater coupe’s 4.8-liter V10 maxes out at 202mph. That’s par for Gran Turismo, but taking one home would be a different story. Perhaps it’s for the best that we’ll never get to; the LFA is a marvel of technology, which is why its starting price in real life is $375K.

The Lexus LFA will be available in Gran Turismo 6 as well, so at least we can keep pushing the limits there.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 5

The Ferrari Enzo was built in a limited run of 399 vehicles as part of the legendary Italian car maker’s 55th anniversary celebrations. It was named after the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. Needless to say it’s a dream car.

In-game, its handling is incredibly sensitive, and it takes a while to get used to. But even if playing Gran Turismo is the only time you’ll ever get to handle the 2002 Ferrari Enzo, you can always dream about seeing it in your garage when you wake up every morning.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 4

This Lotus debuted in GT4, and it’s one of the few vehicles in GT5 that could be race modified. It’s the best of Series 2 of Lotus’s legendary Elise line of sports cars, with a 6-speed manual transmission and a clean-burning Toyota-built 2ZZ-GE engine.

It was also the first Elise in history with a 4-channel ABS. You’re more likely to see a unicorn in your driveway than one of these, but at least the Lotus Elise will get plenty of love in GT6 too.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 6

The McLaren F1 is one of the greatest race cars ever made, if not the greatest flat out. Designed by Gordon Murray to help McLaren compete with Ferrari, the F1 GTR dominated the circuits when it debuted. Just imagine what it could do for you in traffic.

Of course, this just makes us more excited for when the mind-blowing McLaren P1 inevitably (fingers crossed, at least) makes it into Gran Turismo 6 as DLC.

The KTM X-BOW is a newcomer to Gran Turismo 6, and though we’ve yet to take it out for a spin we already know that we want one. The ultra-light sports car (it’s pronounced “crossbow” by the way) is the first car from Austrian motorcycle makers KTM, and it debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008.

After winning Top Gear’s 2008 sports car of the year award, they committed to building 1,000 a year. It’s less rare than some on this list, but still out of reach for most. Thank goodness for Gran Turismo.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 2

The Vector W8 was produced by Vector Aeromotive between 1989 and 1993. They called it “Aeromotive” because they designed it with aerospace materials and design principles. In other words the Vector W8 is basically a space ship.

It’s one of the world’s rarest cars; only 19 were ever produced, and two of those were concept versions. On top of that one prototype was recorded going 242mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Yeah, we’ll take two, thanks.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 5

Once downloadable content was introduced to the Gran Turismo series in GT5 a lot of the best cars started to arrive in extra content packs. When the extra rides were as sick as the Lamborghini Aventador no one seemed to mind, though.

The Aventador replaced Lamborghini’s Murcielago as the flagship vehicle in 2011, and though outwardly it looks similar (iconic scissor doors and all), it’s lighter and faster all around. The Aventador is the cream of the crop.

First appearance: Gran Turismo 4

Jay Leno is known around the world for his love of cars, and a couple from his collection have even made it into Gran Turismo games. His “Blastolene Special,” also known as the Tank Car, is one of them.

It was created by glass specialist Randy Grubb, and it’s named for its Continental AV1790-5B tank engine. The car’s aluminum body weighs less than a tenth of the weight of the tank that its engine originally powered, and with all that extra juice Leno can zip around Hollywood like nobody’s business. If he ever wants to sell it someone please let him know that we’re in the market.
