Kim Kardashian West's latest move keeps in line with the Kardashian family tradition for the future heirs and heiresses.
TMZ notes the mother of four filed a trademark for Psalm West, the name of Kim and Kanye's two-week old newborn. Legal documents show that the application was filed would allow the name's use for a multitude of things such as hair accessories, entertainment services, personal appearances, skin care, puppets, puzzles, toy jewelry, and more.
While it is yet to be determined if Kim and Kanye's fourth child will enter any of these businesses, a trademark would allow him the legal right to leverage his own name for branding purposes, should he wish to do so in the future. More importantly, it prevents others from using it for monetary gain (for example, a trademark would legally prevent someone from naming a strain of weed after your daughter).
The motion is not surprising; in addition to Kim giving the same treatment to her other three children (Saint, North, and Chicago), Khloé and Kylie Jenner have also filed for trademarks for the names of their respective children, True and Stormi.
Other celebrities the same preemptive measures for their children. Last year, DJ Khaled filed an application for Asahd (who also has executive producer credits on his dad's latest album). JAY-Z and Beyoncé similarly sought out legal protection for Blue Ivy, the name of their first child, and are still currently involved in a lawsuit pertaining to the trademark.
In related Kim/Psalm news, Friday Peoplereported that a source said Kim is “aware that she got negative comments” on a the first public photo of Psalm. (Commenters criticized the soft items visible in the baby’s crib, raising questions about safety and parenting skills.) “It was a split-second, staged photo,” the magazine’s source said. “As a mother of four, she very much knows how to keep her newborn safe in the crib. Again, it was staged for a photo.”
