All of the wait (and frustration) over the launch of Disney+ is done; Disney's streaming service is officially live. The house that Mickey Mouse built has spent years acquiring some of your favorite media companies, including Marvel Entertainment and Lucasfilm, to present one of the most awe-inspiring collections of content under one umbrella. That's no shade to Netflix; the current streaming giant has been pushing the envelope when it comes to the amount of original and acquired series it provides, but what Disney has done is unprecedented. Instead of having to worry about licensing deals, they created a one-stop-shop for all of your favorites. Everything from Iron Man's reign to Woody's adventures is contained on one easy-to-use app.
The problem is, with their fire collection available in one spot, it's difficult to know exactly what you're getting into on Day 1. That's where we come in. For those of you who want a quick look at Disney+ before you spend countless hours reliving your youth (or diving into some of your recent favorites), you might need a primer on what Disney+ offers, especially when it comes to new series and movies. Here's a look at everything available on Disney+ at launch.
'The Mandalorian'
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte
Described as a "space western," Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian follows in the footsteps of fan favorites like Boba and Jango Fett. Set in the time between the fall of the Empire but before the First Order appears, we follow a loner on the outer reaches of the Star Wars universe. It contains a star-studded cast and is easily the most anticipated new series hitting Disney+ at launch.
All of Your Favorite Disney Films and Shows
Starring: All of your faves
One of the biggest selling points for Disney+ is the fact that Disney would be opening up the vault, giving fans access to the dynamic catalog of films they've created and acquired over time. We're talking your favorite animated classics—Hercules, A Goofy Movie, 101 Dalmatians, The Lion King and more—alongside live-action favorites like The Mighty Ducks, High School Musical, Blank Check, and others. They also have a plethora of your favorite Disney Channel shows, including That's So Raven, Lizzie McGuire, Boy Meets World, and the rest of your childhood Disney programming. Similar to the WWE Network, you could get lost in the amount of throwback material on Disney+, all available for the first time in one place.
Select Marvel Films
Starring: All of your faves
This is one of the more intriguing bits of Disney+, and an example of how the streaming wars are currently going down. While Disney owns Marvel Entertainment, thereby giving it the keys to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the entire collection of MCU films won't be available at launch.
Two of its latest gems, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, are available at launch, alongside fan favorites like Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man, both Guardians films, and more. Sadly, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, and Thor Ragnarok WON'T be available on Disney+ until their licensing deal with Netflix expires in 2020.
'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series'
Starring: Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Mark St. Cyr, Kate Reinders
If you're a fan of the iconic series that made stars out of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and others and love shows like The Office, this 10-episode series is right up your alley. Set at the real East High, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a mockumentary based on the lead-up to a new performance of a musical based on the musical series. That's a mouthful. And should be hilarious...if you're into that sort of thing.
'Encore!'
Starring: Kristen Bell
If you're a drama kid who wants to revisit their glory days, Encore! is for you. The Kristen Bell-hosted (and executive produced) reality series follows adults reuniting with their high school musical squad to recreate the performances of their youth. Friends realign, enemies revisit history, chaos ensues.
'Lady and the Tramp'
Starring: Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux
With all of these classic films dropping, it'd make sense that Disney would release a new original. In the vein of modern flips of The Lion King and Jungle Book, Disney's revamping 1955's Lady and the Tramp with Thompson as the voice of Lady and Theroux voicing Tramp. If you're not up on this opposites attract in the canine world flick, rectify that.
'The World According to Jeff Goldblum'
Starring: Jeff Goldblum
This Nat Geo series does exactly what it says on the tin. Host Jeff Goldblum takes his singular way of looking at life and dissects every day things—sneakers, ice cream—and injects science and historical facts into the world's modern wonders.
'The Imagineering Story'
Starring: n/a
Sixty-seven years of Disney history is being broken down in this six-hour reflection on Walt Disney Imagineering, which has built twelve theme parks worldwide.
'Marvel's Hero Project'
Starring: n/a
While Marvel is known for gifting the world with some of the most profitable hero tales ever told, they also want to give back to the real-life heroes walking among us. Hero Project finds Marvel telling the stories of some of the youngest heroes walking the Earth, then rewarding them for their work.
'Forky Asks a Question'
Starring: n/a
It wouldn't be a Disney party without some Pixar representation. Forky, one of the stars of Toy Story 4, is out to answer some of the deepest questions out there, like "what is love" and "what is time" in this collection of 10 shorts.
'SparkShorts'
Starring: n/a
Pixar isn't done, though. Their SparkShorts series finds the animation house putting on new creators. This short film series might feature creatives who will make your next favorite feature-length Pixar film.
'Noelle'
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Bill Hader
The launch of Disney+ is a little over a month ahead of Christmas, so it's only right that they'd have an original Christmas film available for subscribers. Starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader, Noelle tells the tale of Kris Kringle's children Noelle (Kendrick) and Nick (Hader). Nick's set to inherit the Santa throne this year, but has to take a mental health vacation before stepping up. Noelle wishes it was her, and when Nick doesn't make it back in time for Christmas, it's up to Noelle to save Christmas. Sounds like holiday fun for the entire family.
