Putting GTA VI aside, no video game has more anticipation and hype than Marvel's Wolverine, a single-player action adventure from Insomniac Games—the same studio behind Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank. It's been brewing for quite some time; the developers announced its development all the way back in 2021. Since then, we've gotten intermittent news, until a ransomware attack leaked unfinished footage in 2023, and a two-minute trailer dropped in 2025.
But last night, at PlayStation's State of Play on June 2, the studio debuted an extended gameplay trailer. It revealed characters, plot points, a melee-based fighting system, and blood. Lots and lots of blood that oozed, spurted, and covered the eponymous main character from head to toe. The studio later clarified that players would have the option to turn off the gore, to better accommodate people's squeamishness.
These are the most exciting details that we noticed in the extended gameplay trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, coming exclusively to the PlayStation 5 on September 15.
Hairy Logan
The trailer opens with a cutscene in which Logan scopes out the enemy from a rooftop. Notice the individual hair follicles on his arm and the weathering on his gloves and trademark yellow armor. These are next-level visuals that take full advantage of the PS5 Pro's potential.
Gauges and Meters
Then, Logan jumps off the roof and starts killing people. We can see a couple of cool details concerning gameplay. The bar on the top is the health bar; in keeping with Logan's healing factor, it slowly recharges after you take damage. Below that is the rage meter; as you gain momentum in your fight, it builds, allowing you to pull off more violent, damaging moves. At the bottom-left of the screen, we see a wheel. The game will feature unlockable abilities and moves that you can 'slot' into the wheel, customizing your Wolverine to your personal preferences. Each ability seems to have a cool-down mode, which means you can't spam a move. You have to wait for it to recharge.
Trask Industries
Here is the plot summary on the official site:
Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine, but the past wasn’t finished with him yet. Three years after walking out on his team, Wolverine rejoins the mutant task force, Team X, in their darkest hour.
Driven by his fanatical belief in human superiority, Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants. Only Wolverine has what it takes to save them.
In his fight for the future, Wolverine must team up with fellow mutants across the globe through locations like Canada, Japan, and the Marvel island nation of Madripoor. With the fate of humans and mutants hanging in the balance, Logan knows the world needs a hero; however, they’ll have to settle for Wolverine.
If the name Trask sounds familiar, it's because he's a longtime villain of the X-Men. Trask is a military scientist responsible for creating the massive robotic Sentinels to hunt down and kill mutants. Trask was the main villain in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), played by Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).
I’ve got your scent!
It seems like Wolverine can track his opponents and detect them through walls. He has mutant enhanced sense—specifically, an excellent sense of smell.
Leech appearance
We see Leech held prisoner by Trask Industries. Leech debuted in 1984, and he has the power to depower or suppress any mutant's abilities if they are within his radius. He was a key plot point in the film X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), in which Worthington Labs created a "cure" for mutants by analyzing his genetic makeup.
Other possible mutants
The other kids in the truck with the Leech are mutants as well, based on the suppressive collars around their necks. It's unconfirmed who these characters are, but the second one from the left appears to be Toad, with his trademark goggles. In the comics and films, Toad has a massive tongue and the ability to jump. Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace) played the character in the first X-Men film (2000).
Gore Regulator
There's blood everywhere in this game, the outcome of the “no compromises on violence” ethos the design team took.
If you think it's excessive, the game gives you the option to switch it off. AKA don't let a weak stomach put you off from this experience.
Jean Grey
We see Jean Grey, one of Professor X's original students, in the trailer. Gifted with psychic powers, she teams with Wolverine to take out a group of enemies.
To be clear, however, Marvel's Wolverine is a single-player game where you play only as Logan. Jean Grey and other characters serve supporting roles in both the narrative and the combat.
Tag Team Action
It seems that if you pay attention to Jean Grey's cues, there are instances where you can pull off a tag team move; Jean holds the enemy steady, and Logan lunges in for the kill. Elsewhere in the game, Jean can use her powers to confuse the enemy or help Logan bypass a stealth sequence.
Berserker Mode
Here's a shot of Logan in full Level 3 rage "Berserker" mode, which enables him to do more damage and execute special kills. The screen's colors turn black and white, symbolically showing how Logan devolves to a feral state.
Motorcycle
It wouldn't be Logan without his trusty motorcycle. It seems the game has some chase sequences similar to those in the Uncharted trilogy—part manual driving, part interactive cinematic cutscenes.
Back from the dead
If Wolverine loses all his health but still has a partially filled rage bar, he can redirect this energy to his healing factor and get a second chance. Wolverine is durable as hell, but he can die if you make too many mistakes.
Adamantium skeleton
This shot demonstrates Wolverine's healing factor; we can see his skin knitting over his adamantium skeleton in real time. That has to hurt; Wolverine can heal from these injuries, but he still feels the pain from them.
Omega Red
It seems like we're getting a boss fight against Omega Red, another mutant with a healing factor. Dangerous and psychotic, Omega Red was once a KGB Operative. He has metal coils extending from his wrists, which he can use to drain the life of his adversaries.
Mystique
We also get a look at Mystique, who, like Toad, is typically a villain working for Magneto. She has the ability to change her appearance and has been a main character in nearly all the X-Men films. Jennifer Lawrence most recently performed the role.
Sentinel
We see a human-sized Sentinel, a scaled-down version of the boss fight behemoth in the first trailer. Designed by Trask Industries, the Sentinels' mission is to apprehend and kill mutants.
Sabretooth
The final character reveal is Sabretooth, who will serve a supporting role similar to Jean Grey’s. But apparently, instead of directly helping Logan, Victor will compete with him for the higher kill count.
Suit and claw options
Buying the digital deluxe version of Marvel’s Wolverine will give you, in addition to some free development points, swappable suits and claws. Based on the studio's critically acclaimed Spider-Man games, this customization will be extensive, covering every significant era of Wolverine's history.
