UPDATED 7/13, 6:30 p.m. ET: Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar to new heights with its latest achievement being the highest-grossing domestic movie from Paramount.

With $601.9 million earned in the North American box office, Maverick has surpassed the 1997 film Titanic, which amassed $600.7 million in its original run before returning to theaters to push its domestic sum to $659 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Aside from becoming the first movie of Tom Cruise’s career to reach the $1 billion mark, the Top Gun sequel also broke the Memorial Day weekend domestic box office record.

In wake of the success of Maverick, Miles Teller toldEntertainment Tonight that he and Cruise have talked about a possible follow-up, but said the decision is ultimately comes down to TC.

Top Gun: Maverick has officially surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, per the Hollywood Reporter. That makes it the first $1 billion-grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s storied career.

Maverick continues to attract moviegoers nearly one month removed from its theatrical release, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Deadline reports the Top Gun sequel and the Baz Luhrmann-directed film Elvis are neck-and-neck for the No. 1 spot at the weekend domestic box office. Both movies are expected to bring in somewhere around $30.5 million.

Joining the billion-dollar club is just the latest feat for the Cruise-starring blockbuster. It broke the Memorial Day weekend domestic box office record with a $156 million opening, which was held for 15 years by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. The film has continued to chug along since then, despite the debut of two expected summer blockbusters in Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear.

It officially became the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career last week, when it pushed past $800 million. The previous high mark of $791.1 million was held by his 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout.

Some analysts originally believed that Maverick would begin to lose steam and settle in at around $900 million, especially since the film wasn’t released in Russia and China, but that clearly wasn’t the case. Positive word of mouth and a high degree of rewatchability signal that Top Gun: Maverick will continue to perform well into the summer.
