'The Last Jedi' Is Projected to Make Well Over $200 Million in Its Opening Weekend

With the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise, 'The Last Jedi' is on its way to earning the big bucks.

Star Wars continues to basically print money at the box office with its latest installment in the franchise, The Last JediDeadline reports that the film is projected to make somewhere between $216 and $220 million during the three-day weekend. The projection falls short of eclipsing the record-setting $247.966 million set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Box office analysts cannot accurately pinpoint where The Last Jedi will ultimately wind up because they're operating with such a small sample size. By Monday morning, the film could be projected to net an even higher three-day total. On Friday, Last Jedi hauled in $45 million, making it the second-highest preview night ever, just behind The Force Awakens which took home $57 million.

The Last Jedi is just icing on the cake for Disney, who recently acquired 20th Century Fox, in addition to Fox Searchlight, 20th Century Fox Television, FX Productions, FX Networks, Fox21, and National Geographic Partners, for a whopping $52.4 billion in stock. Last Jedi also comes at a great time for the film industry which is experiencing its worst summer in 11 years. Of course, not every movie can have an impact on the box office quite like Star Wars. It's up to all studios, including the new Disney-Fox, to create an "event" that will make consumers want to go to their nearby theater and purchase a ticket.
