The Nintendo Switch has smashed the record for the fastest-selling U.S. console of all-time, moving 4.8 million units in its first 10 months. The Switch surpassed the previous mark set by the Wii which sold four million units in the same amount of time.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé hints that sales over the holiday season helped push the Switch over the top. "Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond," Fils-Aimé said.

The impact of the Switch has also been felt in Japan, where the console has eclipsed the first-year sales mark of the PlayStation 2. One year after its release on March 4, 2000, the PS2 sold 3,016,622 units while the Switch has amassed 3,258,083 units since it came out on March 3, 2017.

Titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildSuper Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have found themselves piggy-backing off of the success of the Nintendo Switch. The latest installment in the The Legend of Zelda series and Super Mario Odyssey have been purchased by over 55 percent of Switch console owners while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is owned by more than 50 percent of Switch buyers.
