Jharrel Jerome took home his first Emmy award Sunday for his portrayal of Korey Wise in the Netflix miniseries When They See Us.

Jerome snagged the victory in a stacked category for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie that included Escape at Dannemora’s Benicio del Toro, Mahershala Ali of True Detective, and Sam Rockwell from Fosse/Verdon. However, looking around the room as the 21-year-old actor stepped onto the stage, everyone was overjoyed to see that his stirring performance was commemorated with an Emmy.

While his acceptance speech included the usual suspects, such as his peers, cast and crew, and family, Jerome took a moment to dedicate his win to the true inspirations whose harrowing life experiences brought this story to life.

"Most important[ly], this is for the men known as the Exonerated Five," he said. "Thank you so much. It's an honor, it's a blessing."
