Hulu, 'The Handmaid's Tale' Edges Out Netflix for More Emmy Wins

The Emmys are no longer about the networks and their respective shows battling it out. The streaming original series has made its mark in a big way in this year's awards ceremony, thanks to platforms like Netflix and Hulu. After amassing nearly doubled their total nominations in 2017 with 91, Netflix appeared to be poised to take the 2017 Primetime Emmys by storm. Instead, it was Hulu and their popular hit series The Handmaid's Tale that stole the show tonight.

In Outstanding Drama Series category, Hulu faced an uphill battle going up against Netflix which held down three of the seven spots with Stranger Things, House of Cards, and The Crown. However, it was the dark horse, The Handmaid's Tale, that came out on top. The Handmaid's Tale also took home awards for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Elisabeth Moss for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

For Netflix, The Crown's John Lithow won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series while Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win for comedy writing. Black Mirror: San Junipero took home awards for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.

Even though Hulu and Netflix were able to snag some of the bigger awards of the night, their nine combined wins may signal that Emmy voters aren't ready to welcome the streaming original series platform just yet.
