Brad Pitt revealed that he has “never had a gay experience,” conceding that, at 61 years old, he “kinda missed that window.”
During a free-flowing conversation with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman on the Armchair Expert podcast, Pitt brought up how he has never had a gay experience, leading the Parenthood actor to believe that he had a chance with the F1 star.
“Given the way you and I met, does it make you nervous—,” Shepard asked, to which Pitt joked, “Sexually, you mean?”
“Oh, he wishes!” Padman added.
“That’s hopefully where it ends!” Shepard fired back.
“You know, I’ve never had a gay experience,” Pitt jokingly said. “I kinda missed that window. But if I did…it wouldn’t be with you.”
Pitt went on to joke that Shepard would be “maybe 14th or 15th.”
Shepard and Pitt also opened up about the first time they met at an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting years ago.
“Does it make you nervous to have to talk with me in public?” Shepard asked, to which Pitt replied, "No, not at all. Quite at ease," adding, "We can say men's group, right?"
"I was going to say AA,” Shepard responded. “You’re not supposed to say it, but I say it.”
Pitt praised the experience of working through his struggles with sobriety at AA.
"It was AA. It was when I was first getting sober. I just thought it was just incredible,” he said. “Men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it. I thought it was a really special experience.”
Pitt recalled a time when he was a kid and in a moment of “desperation,” he grabbed a peer by the testicles during a fight. Shepard wondered if the effectiveness of the move was due to the act itself or the existence of homophobia.
Pitt later admitted he and his brother had been subjected to homophobic slurs, which was an extension of the hypermasculinity that existed at the time.
“Don’t cry. Don’t be gay. ‘You f**.’ That kind of stuff. A lot of that,” he said at the 30:50 mark. “That was that era—that error, but era.”
