Fresh off the international box office success of Godzilla vs. Kong, director Adam Wingard has been chosen by Warner Bros. to helm and help pen the script for the film ThunderCats, based off the 1980s animated series, Deadline reports.
In an interview with Deadline, Wingard called ThunderCats a “dream project,” reminiscing about how he spent a majority of 10th grade handwriting an original film screenplay which totaled 272 pages. When he heard that there was a script for ThunderCats out there for a project that was being produced by some people he previously worked with, he wanted to get involved on rewrites with his friend Simon Barrett.
The upcoming ThunderCats film will be “a hybrid of CGI and animation,” Deadline reports.
“Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about ThunderCats as I have,” he said. “They gave me the reins. I saw this as an opportunity to do a new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before.”
Wingard previously directed the 2016 remake of Blair Witch, and the Netflix film Death Note. His most recent work was Godzilla vs. Kong, which will be released on HBO Max and in U.S. theaters on Wednesday.
Godzilla vs. Kong grossed over $121.8 million following its release in 38 overseas markets. The film earned $70.3 million in a three-day span in China, becoming the highest opening weekend for a non-local film since 2019. The sequel to Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters also became the largest debut for a movie since the pandemic caused the movie industry to shut down.
