The first full-length trailer for The Mummy film starring Tom Cruise has just been released, and it will probably bring chills down you spine. But if you were thinking the film was going to be exactly like the original 1999 movie, you are completely off track.
The high-effect trailer introduces Cruise as Nick Morton aboard what appears to be some sort of military-owned plane. After a freak, in-flight ambush, Morton finds himself in a body bag in an unknown facility. The nearly three-minute clip walks viewers through a mysterious land full of gods, monsters, and other not-so-good creatures.
The Mummy will be brought to the big screen by director Alex Kurtzman, who has lent his genius to other major blockbusters like Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man. Russell Crowe, New Girl's Jake Johnson, The People v. O.J. Simpson's Courtney B. Vance will also star in the production alongside Cruise. Cruise is fresh of the set of his other major film of the year, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
The Mummy originally premiered over a decade earlier on May 7, 1999. It featured Brendan Fraser as Morton and Rachel Weisz as his love interest. The film's reboot is reportedly the first of Universal's classic monster movie franchise. Although it is the first film to be announced coming from the major production company, a Van Helsing movie is rumored to be in development, which will have some connections to The Mummy, according to reports. The Mummy is projected to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
