It seems without anyone knowing Sony have been working on a emulator that allows you to play PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 4, those sly rouges.

In a statement released by a Sony representative they address the current status of the emulators development:

So that’s it? No information on how far into the development stages they’re in or when we can expect a release date? Sony are being very vague about it and to be fair the public would not have found out if it wasn’t for Eurogamer stumbling upon it by chance. They recently received a special edition copy of the new Star Wars: Battlefront game for PS4, which came with a code for four downloadable titles: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, all of which were orginally released on the PlayStation 2.

According to Tech Radar:

Whilst this is exciting news for PlayStation community once can’t help but suspect this is in retaliation to Microsoft developing backwards compatibility for over 100 Xbox 360 titles to play on the Xbox One. Coincidence? We think not.
