All of the Easter Eggs Found in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"

With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hitting theaters today, there's more than just the film itself to keep you occupied. Director Marc Webb has littered the movie with winks, nods, and hints at what is to come for the Web Slinger in future movies. From all of the little easter eggs dropped during the story, we now have an idea of not only where The Amazing Spider-Man 3 might be heading, but also what is in store for the inevitable Sinister Six spin-off.

And when he’s not planting the seeds for sequels and spin-offs, Webb simply has fun paying tribute to the characters’ comic book past with references to Spider-Man’s long pop culture history. There are tips of the cap to Spider-Man’s 50+ year comic book lineage, as well as a loving tribute to the Wall Crawler’s first animated adventure. What would someone like Spider-Man use as his cellphone ringtone? The theme to his very own cartoon, of course. During the course of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, whenever Peter Parker’s phone goes off, the ring is the unmistakable melody to the classic Spider-Man cartoon from 1967. If you don’t remember the theme—and, honestly, how could you not?—get your nostalgia fill here:

One of the forgotten cast members of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is The Office star, B.J. Novak. And it’s easy to forget him because he's basically nothing more than a glorified cameo during the film. However, this is more than just a simple wink to the audience; Novak is actually playing Alistair Smythe, an important member of the Spider-Man rogue’s gallery.

In the comics, Smythe is the man behind the Spider Slayer robots, and he is probably best remembered as one of the stars of the '90s animated series. While Novak’s version doesn’t seem to have those evil intentions yet, who is to say he won't turn bad in time for one of the sequels?

This one might be harder to catch because her last name is never given, but in the movie, Felicity Jones plays Harry Osborn’s assistant, Felicia. Spider-Man fans know that there is only one prominent woman named Felicia in the comics and that's Felicia Hardy, a.k.a Black Cat. Think of her as Spider-Man's version of Catwoman, a morally troubled crook who winds up shacking up with the Wall Crawler on more than one occasion.

There are no hints that a stint as the felonious feline is in her future, but Felicia is clearly savvier than the men around her give her credit for. And plus, by the time the end credits to the movie roll, Spidey's love life obviously has some room available. We’ll have to wait and see if this one pans out.

Batman has his Arkhman Asylum, but did you know that Spider-Man’s villains are also detained in a similar psychiatric hospital called Ravencroft? This institute for the criminally insane plays a big role in Amazing Spider-Man 2 after Electro is held captive there by Oscorp and Dr. Kafka, who is also a part of the comics as a female doctor. Ravencroft is somewhat obscure in the comics now, but it seems like it’s about to play a big role in the upcoming Spider-Man movies, especially with the Sinister Six about to debut.

One other fictional prison mentioned in the movie is The Vault, where Rhino is being held. In the books, this is a prison solely designed to hold the most dangerous super villains, but unlike Ravencroft, it doesn’t necessarily deal with psychotics. In the past, the inmate list has included the likes of Venom, Juggernaut, and, coincidentally, Electro. Neither prison is as iconic as Arkham, so it would be easy to completely miss their significance in this movie.

This Easter egg was already illogically spoiled in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailers, but if you missed those, we've got you covered. At one point in the film, inside of Oscorp, the ominous sight of Doctor Octopus’ tentacles and the Vulture’s wings are shown when Harry discovers the Green Goblin equipment.

This is obviously a hint of at least two members of the Sinister Six that Harry is slowly putting together; however, neither Otto Octavius nor Adrian Toomes actually make appearances in the movie. So while Sony knows that these characters will likely be in the next Spider-Man film, we just don’t know who will play them yet. We don't envy whoever has to follow Alfred Molina's performance as Doc Ock from the original Spider-Man 2.

In both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there is a shadowy figure pulling strings from behind the scenes and slowly gathering a group of villains together for Harry Osborn. He’s shown in Doctor Connors’ prison cell at the end of the first movie, and in the sequel he visits Harry in prison to further discuss their future plans. While it’s not explicitly said in the movies, it turns out this man is Gustav Fiers, a.k.a The Gentleman, played by Michael Masse.

The Gentleman is a character who has only appeared briefly in a Sinister Six novel series, but he's the man that reunites these villains in the hopes of destroying Peter Parker. In the comic book world, Fiers blames Parker’s parents for ruining his villainous plans in the ‘60s, and with these movies dealing with the Parker family secrets, this character is actually a natural fit for the series.

Unlike the Marvel Studios movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn’t have a post-credit stinger scene that forces you to spend an extra 10 minutes in the theater alone with the ushers. Instead, this movie puts all of its winks and nods in the credits themselves. The graphics behind the credits include brief glimpses at the iconic weaponry of some of Spider-Man’s biggest foes, including: Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Rhino, Kraven, and, most likely, Chameleon.

With these movies building towards the eventual debut of the Sinister Six, it’s easy to assume that these credits are hinting at the roster. Now whether they appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or just the Sinister Six spin-off is something you’re going to have to wait for.
