Complex Original

If recent box office performances are any indication, we are entering a world in which independent cinema dominates theaters. With recent successes of films such as Obsession and Backrooms, films made with much lower budgets with increasingly large returns, a new class of creators and directors born of the YouTube world is really picking up a lot of speed in the entertainment business. If these movies can beat out huge franchises like Star Wars and The Devil Wears Prada, then we are witnessing a shift in culture that’s frankly fascinating to watch.

In honor of this brave new world we are entering, we wanted to educate our readers with this look at the top 20 highest-grossing independent films of all time.

Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004)

Director: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks
Release date: April 16, 2004
Box office gross: $154,116,796

At the top of our list is, of course, a Quentin Tarantino production. Kill Bill: Volume 2 continues The Bride’s quest for revenge after taking out a few names on her Kill List, looking to make it complete by killing Bill as the title commands. This film, while still full of action, focuses more on the history of The Bride and how she became one of the most deadly assassins in the world, and her relationship with Bill. As the quest comes to its conclusion, revelations that were previously unknown to our hero make her question her motives and grudge against those who wronged her.

While people view this film as inferior to the first, it was still a successful film that put a satisfying close to this story of vengeance and redemption.
