Timothée Chalamet Gained 20 Pounds to Play Bob Dylan: 'I Was Thinner Than the Guy'

Even with gaining weight for 'A Complete Unknown,' Chalamet was "thinner" than Dylan.

Timothée Chalamet packed on some pounds for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in musical biopic A Complete Unknown.

While discussing his new movie with NPR's Alisa Chang, Chalamet recalled his intentional weight gain to play the legendary folk singer, although he was significantly "thinner" than Dylan.

"He's one of the great American artists of our time, so I'm sure some of your listeners could speak to it better than I could," Chalamet said. "That said, I've, like I said, I've turned over every stone. I did all the work, like you just described, physicality, behavior-wise. But something we haven't really talked about, I also put on 20 pounds because..."

He continued, "...Believe it or not, I was thinner than the guy, you know?"

Chalamet previously made headlines for altering his weight for the role of drug abuser Nic Sheff in 2018 biographical drama Beautiful Boy, where he had to lose 18 pounds. His weight loss goal for the movie was originally 15 pounds.

"It’s just very hyper-concentrated portions of nutrients," Chalamet told Emma Stone in a 2018 edition of Actors on Actors. “Did you see Snowpiercer? It’s like the protein goo."

Chalamet's Dylan impression hasn't stopped with the James Mangold-directed movie. The actor performed a special set of Dylan songs during his recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig.

The two-time Academy Award nominee also sported a blond look dedicated to Dylan during the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown. The hair and entire outfit was a tribute to Dylan's appearance at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival premiere of Western drama Masked and Anonymous.
