The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner has confirmed the cause of Michelle Trachtenberg's untimely passing.

The late actress, who starred in Harriet the Spy and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was found unconscious and unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment in February. Trachtenberg, who died at 39, underwent a liver transplant before her passing and was often photographed at public events with a cane between 2018 and 2020.

On Wednesday (April 16), the medical examiner revealed to People that Trachtenberg's death was ruled as natural, with her sudden death being a result of "diabetes mellitus."

A spokesperson for the medical examiner's office shared that "the amended determination was made following review of toxicology testing results" and that "toxicology testing can be done without autopsy."

Those mourning Trachtenberg's death were fellow actors and Buffy alum, like Sarah Michelle Gellar, who posted an Instagram carousel dedicated to the late actress in February.

Trachtenberg addressed social media followers who made offensive remarks about her physical appearance one year before her death. A source close to Trachtenberg said the Ice Princess star suffered greatly after receiving her liver implant.

"She was really, really sick and open with those in her circle about how much she was struggling," the person told People. "She was “pale, gaunt, very thin, and dealing with health issues."
