Olandria Carthen expressed that she would like to "transform" a moment of racism into "something actionable" after her former Love Island co-star Huda Mustafa — along with her boyfriend, Louis Russell — seemingly laughed at a racial slur.
During an Instagram Live session hosted by Mustafa and Russell on Tuesday (October 28), a user hopped on and referred to Carthen as the N-word. The couple then appeared to laugh at the comment.
Following the incident, Carthen seemingly respond with an Instagram Stories post but did not mention Mustafa and Russell by name.
"I do not condone racism of any kind, nor do I entertain it," she wrote. "That kind of language is never acceptable. Not in anger, not as a joke, not ever."
She continued: "Words like that carry generations of pain, and pretending otherwise only keeps the cycle going. Defending it, laughing about it, or making excuses is even worse."
Olandria added that she expected "surface level apologies" that will soon "fade."
"l'd like to transform this moment into something actionable," she went on. "I encourage those who have participated in the stream and their followers to demonstrate a genuine commitment to anti-racism by donating to organizations and foundations dedicated to educating and uplifting this community such as the UNCF, NAACP, and/or the Thurgoods Marshall College Fund. I will be making a personal donation as well."
She also shared donation links for HBCUs and educational resources for Black students.
Mustafa claimed in an Instagram Story (shared by TMZ) that she and Russell "didn't hear what was said" by the Love Island fan, and "hung up immediately" after the racial slur was used.
"Laughter was because it was AWKWARD," Mustafa wrote on her story. "Like, who the heck says something offensive like that on a call?"
After acknowledging that the slur was "a bad word," she added that its use was "awkward and inappropriate" and that the person was "in the wrong."
It's not the first time Love Island cast members have faced heat over accusations of racism. Jana Craig and Kenny Rodriguez from Season 6 broke up after Rodriguez allegedly texted offensive remarks about Black women to his friends.
