Kids director Larry Clark has been named co-curator of a retrospective exhibit chronicling his years-long exploration of youth culture.
Curated alongside photographer Jake Millstone, exhibit Shoot First: Larry Clark’s America will run June 4-7 at Hubble Studio in Los Angeles. The event will look back on Clark’s groundbreaking 1971 photography book Tulsa, where the filmmaker and artist focused his lens on young residents of his hometown. Shoot First also spans Clark’s controversial 1983 project Teenage Lust, followed by his landmark films Kids and Bully, released in 1995 and 2001, respectively.
Original prints and handpainted works from Clark’s darkroom practice will be spotlighted in the exhibit, including a selection of 4x6 prints available for $100 each.
Clark's influence on American youth culture extends well beyond his films. He has long documented skateboarding, streetwear, and downtown culture, and has collaborated with Supreme over the years.
The opening reception for Shoot First will be held June 4 from 8 p.m. to late, while gallery hours are 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily until the exhibit’s conclusion on June 7.
