John Boyega’s role in the Skywalker Saga might not be complete after all: the actor has revealed that he’s had a conversation with Lucasfilm chief creative officer and president Dave Filoni.
The English actor, who played Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker in the 2010s, addressed the franchise during Megacon Orlando over the weekend. According to ScreenRant, when an attendee shouted for Boyega to “Get Dave [Filoni] on the phone” to reprise the role of Finn, Boyega confirmed that they “actually have” spoken.
The good news might be surprising to some, given Boyega’s public critique franchise executives for the mishandling of Black Star Wars characters, and in turn the actors that play them. In a 2020 interview with British GQ, Boyega questioned how POC characters in Star Wars were marketed as main players, and blasted execs for having them “pushed to the side.”
“Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,” he said. “You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all.”
“So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience...’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience.”
The They Cloned Tyrone actor has since shown interest in returning to Star Wars. Last year, Boyega also credited the franchise for being the films he needed at a time that he was struggling financially.
