Isiah Whitlock Jr., best known for his role as Senator Clay Davis in The Wire, has died aged 71.
According to Deadline, the actor's manager Brian Liebman confirmed that Whitlock died peacefully on Tuesday (December 30) after battling a short illness.
While Whitlock was a long-running star on The Wire, which aired for five seasons until the show concluded in 2008, the actor also had prominent roles in former drama series Your Honor and The Good Cop.
The entertainer was also a frequent collaborator of filmmaker Spike Lee, having starred in Da 5 Bloods, BlacKkKlansman, 25th Hour, She's Gotta Have It, She Hate Me, Red Hook Summer and more, among other projects.
Whitlock's catchphrase throughout his nearly 45-year career was "Sheeeeeit," a drawn-out version of "shit," which he first used in 2002 Spike Lee-directed drama 25th Hour. In a 2008 interview, the Indiana native shared that his pronunciation of the word was adopted from an uncle, which eventually became written into his acting roles before entering the pop culture lexicon.
"I was in, I think, Grand Central Station and far away I heard someone say it and they’d be kind of smiling" Whitlock said at the time. "I’m glad people enjoy it."
Towards the end of his life, Whitlock played a central role as police chief Larry Dokes in Netflix mystery series The Residence and his last movie was dark comedy Cocaine Bear.
The actor will posthumously star in upcoming animated sci-fi comedy Hoppers, which releases on March 6, 2026, and drama The Body Is Water, which is currently in post-production.
Among fellow entertainers who recognized Whitlock on social media were The Wire alum Andre Royo and Tray Chaney.
"I can't... another wire brother and friend," Royo wrote on X. "This hurts to no end but your memory will live forever in my heart. Hark the sound of an angel soars. #sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Love you legend Isiah Whitlock. #wirefamilyforlife."
Chaney wrote: "No way!!!!!!! Isiah was kind cool brother! Always showed love every time I seen em! This is tough to keep hearing about my fellow cast members transitioning back to back. RIP ISIAH WHITLOCK JR Shiiiiiittttttttttttt was & will always be classic."
