Channing Tatum looked back on his "painful" split from ex-wife, actress and dancer, Jenna Dewan, in the new Variety cover story.

The Roofman star discussed his past marriage in the new article, published on Tuesday (September 2), roughly six years after he and Dewan divorced. The ex-spouses separated eight years after marrying in 2009 and share a 12-year-old daughter, Everly.

Tatum discussed that in Roofman, his character Jeffrey Manchester is estranged from his daughter, which the actor was able to "understand" considering Everly is raised in two different households.

"Jenna and I are good now, but it was a painful break to have that fall apart, especially being so young. We tried to keep it together, tried for a year and a half, but we knew it was …" Tatum told Variety.

The actor stopped himself from going "into all that" and called their breakup "the past." "But it’s really tough not to have your daughter half the time. I wish I could just have her all the time," he added.

Elsewhere, Tatum said that he's lived "six or seven different lives" and that experience has been "fuel" for him to persist.

"If you’ve really been heartbroken, and really been in pain and felt real, true aloneness … I’ve experienced enough life that I have something to offer. The technique and the ability to actually deliver," he continued.

Dewan has been in a relationship with actor and vocalist Steve Kazee since 2018, while Tatum is currently dating model Inka Williams. Tatum was previously an item with his Blink Twice director Zoë Kravitz, although the two ended their engagement shortly after the film's premiere.

Tatum and Dewan met while co-starring in 2006 dance movie Step Up, but in October 2018, Dewan officially filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized in September 2024.
