Acting legends Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reportedly soon return to The Mummy franchise for a fourth installment.
According to Variety, the entertainers have signed on for the film, which will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence Productions. The filmmakers already have a history in horror, having directed the 2019 flick Ready or Not and the 2022 Scream reboot.
Fraser led the 1999 Mummy remake (the original series of six films ran from 1932 to 1955) as captain Rick O'Connell, while Weisz played British Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. With The Mummy being a box office success, banking $416.4 million in the global box office, the Stephen Sommers-directed movie was followed by three more installments in 2001, 2008 and 2017. The fourth installment is scheduled to premiere next April.
Tom Cruise joined for the poorly-received 'Dark Universe' version of The Mummy in 2017, which was directed by Alex Kurtzman, with none of the original 1999 cast members returning. Fraser only returned for two sequels, 2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but Weisz would only be in the former.
During a 2022 interview with Variety, Fraser confirmed that he was up to return to The Mummy, but suggested that its most recent film was a misstep because it wasn't amusing.
"It is hard to make that movie," the Oscar winner told the publication. "The ingredient that we had going for our 'Mummy,' which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. 'The Mummy' should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary."
