10 People Who Lost Their Jobs Because of Stupid Tweets

Earlier today a girl named Hyley DiBona took to Twitter in the wake of the Charleston, S.C. shooting to share her (disgusting) thoughts on race. Minimal sleuthing revealed she worked for Regal Cinemas in the Las Vegas area, and Twitter called for her to lose her job. The company soon after issued a statement condemning her actions, but DiBona denied she had been fired. Homegirl has been tweeting defiantly since her initial racist tweets went viral and went as far as sharing her other employer, Hooters, with her critics. She even posted a text supposedly from her general manager assuring her she wouldn't lose her job.

Her denial is just that, though. Regal issued a second tweet ensuring the public that DiBona or anyone like her would no longer be employed by the company. Here are DiBona's (now-deleted) tweets, followed by Regal's:

A Texas teenager wasn't too stoked about starting her new job at Jet's Pizza, so her would-be boss happily obliged. Robert Waple, who hadn't tweeted in six years, hopped onto his account to let the girl know her services would no longer be needed. He wrote: "And....no you don't start that FA job today! I just fired you! Good luck with your no money, no job life! Working register, taking phone orders, making subs/salads. Eating free pizza. How hard would that have been?"

Not as hard as trying to recover from that Twitter ethering.

A woman mulling over a job offer from Cisco made things real easy for herself when her potential employer discovered her disparaging Tweet. Another Cisco employee discovered her existential dilemma and let her know he'd pass it onto the hiring manager. She claimed she sent her tweet after already passing up the job, but that sounds like a case of quitting after you've already been fired.

Damian Goddard is no longer a host for Canada's Rogers Sportsnet, but he does voice his opposition to gay marriage on Twitter. The broadcaster was fired after agreeing with hockey agent Todd Reynolds, who publically disagreed with Sean Avery's supporting of gay marriage. "I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage," Goddard wrote. Shortly after the network released its own statement, saying, "Mr. Goddard was a freelance contractor and in recent weeks it had become clear that he is not the right fit for our organization."

Cameron Jankowski won notorious Internet creep Hunter Moore's "piss Olympics" contest and lost his job in the process. The former Taco Bell employee tweeted a photo of himself peeing on a plate of Nachos Bell Grande and drew the ire of Anonymous. While he denied that he'd actually serve the food to a customer, the act of pissing in the back of the house (is that too fancy of a term for Taco Bell) is disturbing enough.

Even public relations executives aren't immune from the most damaging of public behavior. Justine Sacco posted the horrifically racist tweet before hopping on an 11-hour flight to South Africa. By the time she'd arrived the entire Internet was calling for her head, and InterActive Corp had no choice but to serve it up. #HasJustineLandedYet became a trending topic because of the offensive tweet. She later issued a statement saying she was in "anguish knowing that my remarks have caused pain to so many people."

You can't fool the White House with an anonymous Twitter account. Senior national security aid Jofi Joseph used the Twitter pseudonym @NatSecWonk to share his criticism of the White House. For years he tweeted gems like "Growing problem for the Administration — too many 1st term holdovers not getting the hint that it’s time to move on and get the fuck out" and "More people should be asking why John Kerry installed two former aides, both with ZERO foreign policy experience, into top posts at State." A several-month-long investigation eventually led to his termination.

Carly McKinney is a very attractive and very stupid former math teacher from Colorado. Local station 9News discovered several half-naked photos of McKinney posted to Twitter, as well as several drug references and a shot of her straight up smoking in her car. She was suspended for several months before finally being fired in March. It's no surprise that her students tried to save her, though.

Sierra “C-Babi” McCurdy lauded the murder of two Mississippi police officers, and Twitter quickly rallied for Subway to fire the sandwich artist. The company replied to a Twitter user and confirmed the employee no longer worked for them. It didn't, however, respond to his request for ham.

Jon-Barrett Ingels took to Twitter not once, but twice to gripe about Hung star Jane Adams' tipping habits. The first time around he complained about Adams failing to tip on a $13.44 check, which is totally fair. But when Adams returned to right her wrong, Ingels still wouldn't back down, criticizing the actress for only tipping $3 and making a "big deal" about it. Sometimes you need to know when to let things go.
