David Cross has recently spoken out about an unfortunate experience he had when filming a major motion picture. The actor played a music manager in the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, first appearing in the original 2007 movie. Cross returned for The Squeakquel in 2009, which grossed millions of dollars. However, he wasn’t happy with his experience filming the third movie in the franchise, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.
During the April 17 episode of The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, Cross said, "I would never work with any of those people again for the rest of my life. They were just so awful to me." He continued, "The only negative experience I had was on the third movie, which I was contractually obligated to do and they were just so sh*tty to me from the jump."
He explained that he was busy filming The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, waiting to hear whether or not he would be involved in the third movie. "I don't know what the deal was, but right from the beginning—I was in London, because we had been asking for a year—like, 'Am I gonna be [in another movie]?' Because we knew they were gonna do a third one. 'Am I gonna be in it?' I was in pre-production for a show [Todd Margaret] ... and I'm there with my now-wife and basically living there, we're writing, we're in pre-production—50-75 people depended upon me and this show going for their jobs. And we asked and asked and asked and asked.”
He explained that when they finally told him he was in the film, he only had two weeks’ notice. He was alerted around Christmas and needed to fly to Hawaii by January 3.
"They were like, 'If you're not there, they will sue you,’” he said. “It was so crazy. And it got worse from there. They were doing, like, sh*tty things on purpose. Gave me a sh*tty trailer that was leaking, just stuff like that."
Cross is most well-known for his role as Tobias Fünke in Arrested Development. He also starred in the sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David with Bob Odenkirk from Better Call Saul and Nobody.
