Breaking Bad was a massive hit, spawning a successful spinoff show and movie, but most fans don’t know that the franchise almost extended into the video game industry.

The company Firesprite, who made Horizon Call of the Mountain, was once developing a Breaking Bad game as a virtual reality experience. However, unlike traditional games, it was meant to be a narrative experience that allowed players to move around iconic scenes from the show, like the RV, the New Mexico desert, and Walter White’s backyard. Unfortunately, it has since been canceled.

Over the years, there were other games in the works as well. Vince Gilligan, the creator and showrunner of Breaking Bad, revealed that screenwriter and producer Jenn Carrollsaid, “Put a lot of energy and a lot of effort and a lot of talent into writing three or four different stories for different video games including the VR thing.”

Unfortunately, Gilligan has also said, “I wouldn’t hold your breath on a video game.”

Since he prides himself on the quality of his work, he explained that it’s difficult to transition into games: “The way fans love the shows makes us very proud, it makes me be very cognizant of keeping the brand to as high a level as we could keep it. So if you’re gonna do a video game you can’t just do the E.T. Atari video game version, you gotta make it great.”

Luckily, there are other ways for fans to enjoy their favorite characters from the award-winning franchise, like watching Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul in Pluribus, the newest series created by Vince Gilligan.

Fans can also pre-order a new book by Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader. On his Instagram, he recently announced that Do What You’re Gonna Do: The Definitive Oral History of Breaking Bad will be filled with behind-the-scenes details of the iconic show. The book is set to be released on November 3, 2026.
