Those who know of Piers Morgan know that he is someone who always says exactly what he thinks and doesn’t care who it may offend. He’s also the type of person who rarely shows emotion. However, even he admitted he could not help but become emotional when he saw the footage of Sharon Osbourne saying goodbye to her husband, music icon Ozzy Osbourne, on Wednesday, July 30. Sharon and her children joined thousands of fans on the streets of Birmingham, England, Ozzy’s hometown, to say goodbye one last time.

Morgan knows Sharon very well after working alongside her for five seasons on America’s Got Talent. Over that time, he got to witness Sharon and Ozzy’s love firsthand and saw how deeply they cared about one another.

During a July 31 interview on Fox and Friends, Morgan opened up about that experience and how it felt to watch his friend say goodbye to the love of her life.

“You know, it’s very heartbreaking, in one way. I watched Sharon yesterday. I teared up watching her because I’ve known Sharon a long time. She’s a very, very close friend of mine, and to see her so broken the way that she was…. They were married nearly 50 years, and they never pretended they had the perfect marriage. They had probably more challenges than most people will go through, but what they had underpinning it was a ferocious love,” he began.

“It was an undimmed ferocious love, and when I saw Sharon without her Ozzy, you know it really did make me choke up, actually, that very picture,” he said, referencing a photograph of Sharon breaking down while laying flowers by a tribute made for her ex-husband.

Ozzy was a music legend who was 76 years old when he passed away unexpectedly on July 22. He battled various health problems throughout his life, including Parkinson’s disease.
