Lena Dunham appeared on the red carpet on Monday, May 4, for the 2026 Met Gala wearing a head-turning ensemble.
This was Dunham’s return to the Met Gala after seven years away. The 39-year-old creator of Girls wore a dark red gown by Valentino’s Alessandro Michele. The gown was adorned with feathers and sequins and featured a long train.
However, it is the inspiration behind the look that has the internet buzzing.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala was “Costume Art,” which celebrities interpreted in many different ways.
As Dunham revealed to Vogue in a recent interview, her ensemble was actually inspired by a very gruesome painting from long ago. The look was inspired by a painting by 17th-century artist Artemisia Gentileschi called “Judith Slaying Holofernes.” The violent painting itself depicts the Biblical story of Judith, who beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes.
Dunham explained that when working with Michele on his vision for this ensemble, he was drawn to the gruesome nature of this historical image.
“Rather than leaning into the Renaissance garments or the swords or any of it, he was attracted to a particular blood spatter on the neck of Holofernes. Obviously, that’s what I was going to choose,” she said.
As part of her look, Dunham wore a pair of lace-up red heels and a manicure inspired by the blood drops seen in the painting.
Many questioned if Dunham would ever return to the Met Gala again after being away for so long.
In her recent memoir, Dunham described the last time she attended the event in 2017. At the time, she was struggling with health issues and had been in a rehab facility. She said it was a “fever dream — cameras flashing, people shouting names that weren’t mine, champagne I couldn’t drink circulating like a joke I wasn’t in on.”
