Barry Keoghan is ready to move forward with his career with his head held high.
In a new interview with Variety, the 33-year-old Irish actor discussed the intentionality with which he now selects Hollywood roles and the importance of sharing appreciation towards the work of others in the industry.
“We should share the love and always share what each other’s work has done for us. Because everyone has worked extremely hard to get to where we are,” he said.
Keoghan has received no shortage of recognition throughout his career, including an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA win. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s been an easy road.
Throughout his rocky childhood, Keoghan would often be moved around to different homes before eventually being cared for by his grandmother. While he had big dreams, he said they often felt unrealistic.
“I want to become an actor,” he recalled thinking. “It was so far out of reach for me, especially where I came from. “I just didn’t know enough about it — there were no avenues. There were college courses, stuff like that, but I’d not finished school. I was kicked out of school. So that was that.”
When he was 16-years-old Keoghan scored his first role in the crime thriller Between the Canals.
“I remember on ‘Between the Canals,’ when the camera went up, I was like, this is it. It was such a feeling that stands alone from anything else,” he said.
Working his way up throughout the years, Keoghan would discover the less-than-attractive side of fame. In 2024, he opened up to Louis Theroux about experiencing intense online hate, especially surrounding his physical appearance. He said the hate caused him to “really go inside myself, not want to attend places, not want to go outside.”
However, now, Keoghan says he is ready to move forward while allowing his work as an actor to speak for him.
“I want to close the book on it, put my head up, have a smile, and enjoy the moment. I feel like I just read that line off something. I didn’t, but I did look out the window as I said it and smiled,” he said.
