Mathew Knowles Reveals He's Been Diagnosed With Breast Cancer (UPDATE)

The 67-year-old opened up about it all in a segment on 'Good Morning America.'

UPDATED 10/2, 10:45 a.m. ET: Mathew Knowles’ appearance on Good Morning America aired Wednesday morning, with the father of Beyoncé and Solange going into depth about his breast cancer diagnosis. The 67-year-old told Michael Strahan he’s “doing really good” and had surgery “the last week of July, and now I’m doing all the steps for recovery.”

Knowles has the BRCA 2 gene mutation that increases risk for breast cancer, and immediately informed his family. “That was the very first call because this is genetics,” he explained. “It also means that my kids have a higher chance, a higher risk. Even my grandkids have a higher risk. They handled it like they should—they went on and got the [BRCA mutation] test.”

Mathew Knowles will start off Breast Cancer Awareness month by revealing to ABC's Good Morning America that he's been battling the illness.

In a trailer for the show's upcoming in-depth interview with Knowles, GMA's Michael Strahan wonders how Knowles' famous family dealt with his diagnosis. The clip is a teaser for the exclusive interview with the 67-year-old which will air on Wednesday.

It is unclear how long Knowles has been dealing with the illness. Breast cancer in males is an extremely rare diagnosis, but it does happen. Also, the mortality rate is higher for men with breast cancer than for women who are diagnosed with it. This might have prompted the former Destiny's Child manager to share his story with the world in hopes to raise awareness.

As known, Knowles is the father of Beyoncé and Solange. He was married to their mother, Tina, for over thirty years. Following their divorce, Mathew went on to marry Gena Avery in 2013. He's also fathered two children since separating from Tina Knowles.
