Watch the Trailer for the Surprise 'Blair Witch Project' Sequel That Debuted at Comic-Con

As per usual, there has been no shortage of exciting announcements from this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, Calif. We learned, for example, that Rihanna will portray Marion Crane, a character from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, in the upcoming and final season of Bates Motel, which means she'll be tasked with that iconic shower stabbing scene. We also got our first look at the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage, starring Mike Colter who also appeared in Netflix'sJessica Jones. Perhaps one of the most surprising announcements to come from this year's Comic-Con is the sequel to the classic found footage horror film The Blair Witch Project.

In an unexpected turn of events, Adam Wingards' The Woods is now known as Blair Witch, a proper but previously secret sequel to the cult classic from 1999. Wingard directed the film and Simon Barrett wrote it, marking their most recent collaboration since 2013's slasher film You're Next and the following year's action thriller The Guest. Considering the duo's experience in this particular genre, it seems fans and critics are thus far hopeful about the sequel.

Wingards' Blair Witch will star Shameless' James Allen McCune as the brother of Heather Donahue's character from the 1999 film who returns to the foreboding woods to find out what happened to his missing sister. According to an article on Entertainment Weekly, the movie was filmed secretly in Vancouver last year, disguised as The Woods up until the official announcement at Comic-Con was made. Blair Witch was shown publicly at Comic-Con on Friday at an event billed as the screening for The Woods.

Blair Witch marks the third official sequel to the The Blair Witch Project, following 2000's Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which was not warmly received. Perhaps the 16-year break is what the story needs. Check out the trailer for Lionsgate's Blair Witch, which hits theaters Sept. 16.
