If you haven't seen Making a Murderer but want to get a better understanding of some of the shadier aspects of our incarceration system, you really should check the Netflix series out. Its subject, Steven Avery, is currently behind bars, but he also has a few words for his supporters.
Making a Murderer takes a close look at Avery, who was exonerated of a rape conviction after spending 18 years in prison. In 2005, however, he was convicted of killing photographer Teresa Halbach and was put back in jail. While the whole situation remains a little muddy, Avery has now written a letter from jail to his supporters.
Avery's lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, who recently signed on to defend him, visited him in prison and then shared the following note.
Zellner took on Avery's case in January and is now convinced that there is new forensic evidence that will help free her client. Earlier this month she told The Wrap, "We are continuing to examine every aspect of Mr. Avery's case and all of his legal options. We are confident Mr. Avery's conviction will be vacated when we present the new evidence and results of our work to the appropriate court."
Avery's appeal will be heard on Feb. 11. Until then, all we can do is wait and wonder how the whole thing will unfold.
