Director Todd Phillips gave fans a sneak peek of the upcoming sequel to the Joker as production begins.

Phillips shared on his Instagram a photo of Joaquin Phoenix in character as Arthur Fleck, otherwise known as the Joker. He wrote in his caption, “Day 1. Our boy. #joker.”

The image depicts the iconic Batman villain being shaved, a chilling image that plays with his iconic white face paint, which is substituted for shaving cream.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Phoenix as the titular character, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.

Joker debuted in 2019 and became the first R-rated movie in history to earn over $1 billion at the global box office. With a budget of $62.5 million, it became one of the most profitable comic book movies of all time. It broke numerous records like having the biggest domestic opening weekend for the month of October with $96 million.

Although not much is known about Joker: Folie à Deux, Colliderreports the film will be a musical that’s expected to take place inside Arkham Asylum.

The film hits theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
