Meryl Streep Just Used Her Golden Globes Speech to Take Serious Shots at Trump

After accepting the Cecil B. Demille Award, Meryl Streep used her speech to comment on President-elect Donald Trump.

Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award and she gave a passionate speech that took aim at President-elect Donald Trump.

Streep, who made a note that she was losing her voice and had to read her speech, addressed the audience about her anger towards Trump and his actions. She began by noting that the people in attendance were part of the “most vilified segments in American society right now,” saying Hollywood, foreigners, and the press were those individualized groups. She backed up her statements by listing actors and actresses who weren’t born in America but have made a successful living here, with some names including Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Adams, and Natalie Portman.

“So Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” she said. “And if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts."

She continued her speech by referencing Trump’s controversial instance of mocking a disabled New York Times reporter. “It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie, it was a real life,” she said. She made a point that when people see someone in a powerful position behave in that way, it allows for more disrespect and more violence.

Afterwards, she stressed the importance of the press in continuing to call out Trump, saying, “We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage ... We're going to need them going forward and they're going to need us to safeguard the truth.”
