Marijuana Legalization Has Surprisingly Driven Up Alcohol Sales

Marijuana legalization keeps bringing in the big bucks.

The numbers are in and marijuana isn’t bad for you. It also isn’t bad for Colorado’s alcohol industry, which has grown since the state legalized weed. Whether or not it’s because Cool Teens don’t smoke anymore, a memo Miley Cyrus missed, Colorado’s alcohol tax revenue is up 2.1 percent in the last year says The Guardian.

After the state’s weed legalization many thought alcohol sales would suffer, especially after the money from marijuana sales started rolling in (pun intended), but it’s been the opposite. Liquor store owner Justin Martz who owns Mr. B’s Wine & Spirits in Denver says the legalization has been a “non-issue” and has possibly even helped. He says business has been booming with pothead tourists whom he’s been accommodating by providing coupons to local weed dispensaries.

Others, like spokesman for the New Belgium Brewery, Bryan Simpson, said the legalization hasn’t had a major sales impact. “There’s definitely some crossover in the two communities of beer drinkers and "herb enjoyers. But I don’t think people are doubling down in one category or the other.“
