Chime may have cheated a little with the final guest for Ball On A Budget.
Viewers have seen musicians, actors, professional athletes, a jewelry maker, and a fitness coach all prove that money does not equal style. So, when designer Nigel Xavier decided to take the Chime challenge—create a sick outfit for $300 or less—it was a no-brainer that he would excel. It just wasn’t clear how well he would do, and the Atlanta-based artist showed and proved.
The 31-year-old pulled up to Harvester International in Los Angeles with Ball On A Budget host Ashley Nicole Moss to raid the racks. When given several fictitious scenarios to shop for, the Ohio-born creative chose a music festival. “I think I can get creative with that,” he said.
For Xavier, whose pieces brilliantly toe the line between art and fashion, his strategy was simple: start with the outerwear, the statement piece, and then create the fit around that.
Since establishing himself in the fashion industry, Xavier has collaborated with notable figures in music and entertainment. He’s also made his style clear, so while he respects the preferences of the clients who come to him, by seeking his expertise, you’re signing yourself up for something new. “My style is very loud and for a specific person, so if you’re coming to me, you know what you’re going to get.”
