Selena Gomez shared an emotional reaction Donald Trump’s mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
“I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked," Gomez said while sobbing in a since-deleted Instagram video. "The children, I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
The video also included the caption “I’m sorry," which was written alongside a Mexican flag.
In another since-deleted post Gomez wrote, “Apparently, it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” indicating that there was some pushback against her video.
The Only Murders in the Building actress is half-Mexican on her father’s side. Gomez has released several Spanish-speaking songs, including “Taki Taki” and “De Una Vez,” and recently starred in the Spanish-speaking film, Emilia Pérez.
Gomez has often advocated for undocumented immigrants, and served as a producer of the documentary Living Undocumented. She also penned an essay that appeared in Time, where she wrote that "undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day, and I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance.”
Trump has cracked down on undocumented immigrants following his return to the White House. According to the BBC, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 956 people in Chicago, Newark, and Miami who are set be deported. Over 1,400 people were arrested from last Thursday to Saturday.
Trump rescinded a policy that barred ICE from making arrests in schools, churches, and hospitals, per Forbes.
