Lil Tay Shares Legal Update Following Death Hoax, Mother Awarded Primary Custody

Earlier this month, someone hacked the viral star's Instagram account and announced that she and her brother had died.

Lil Tay has recently found herself in the headlines following her death hoax. Now, the 14-year-old has additional news regarding the status of her family’s legal matters.

Last Friday, her attorney Fraser MacLean posted a statement to her Instagram on behalf of Tay’s mother, Angela Tian.

"We have been asked to clarify media confusion as to the current state of the family law proceedings, including custody, child parenting, and child support,” the statement said.

"Given privacy concerns related to the children, we provide a brief status update on the results in the British Columbia Supreme Court," the statement added. "MacLean Law successfully obtained orders for our client that have enabled her daughter to advance her career."

Tian now has primary custody of Tay, whose main residence will also be with her. The mother can move from Vancouver if she wants and has been given "sole day-to-day and final decision-making powers and responsibilities in the best interests of [Lil Tay]."

Tay’s father, Christopher Hope, now has to pay back child support from 2014, which is estimated to be around $275,000.

On Aug. 9, it was believed that the viral star and her brother, Jason Tian, were dead after a statement to her IG revealed the news. A day later, TMZ reports that the incident was a hoax and that she and her brother were alive. More details emerged about the situation: apparently, someone hacked her account, which was later confirmed by Meta.
