Joel Osteen is hip to Druski.
The pastor sat down with Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, where the host asked if Osteen had seen Druski’s megachurch skit and what he thought.
“Well, it was funny, you know? He's making fun of it. I just thought it was funny. That was funny, but it's a megachurch because we're big. But here's the thing. I think this is interesting,” Osteen said at the 52:00 minute mark.
“We never tried to have a big church. It really wasn't a goal. It was just a goal to help people,” Osteen added. “And so my parents started with 90 people back in 1959. So I grew up in a small church. I knew everybody til I was 10 years old, it was still 90 people. And so it grew to thousands by the time my dad died. But we never really tried to have a big church. We just didn't want to turn people away. We had to just make room for more people. So I think the goal was not just the bigness, but the goal is to impact people.”
Back in January, Druski dropped off a new sketch that parodied megachurch pastors who exploit people’s faith for profit. In the clip, the comedian is seen assuming the role of a dripped-out megachurch pastor, suspended by wires above his congregation.
“I’m going to have Wanda stand up here,” he later says, pointing to an elderly woman sitting near the front of the congregation. “Wanda told us earlier this month that she cannot have a baby anymore, so I impregnated her with the word of God. I’m going to impregnate everyone with the word of God!”
Elsewhere in Osteen’s Impaulsive conversation, the 63-year-old revealed that it cost $100M to renovate Lakewood Church, where he serves as senior pastor, while also reflecting on how his dad’s perspective as a Christian differs from his own.
“My dad was taught to be holy or a Christian, you need to be poor, and you need to think defeated. And this was years ago,” Osteen explained at the 1:11:00 hour mark. “I just have a different mindset …it cost a hundred million dollars to renovate this facility. I can't do that with a mindset of, ‘Oh, we're not supposed to have anything.’
“I got to believe that God will bless you and your businesses. And I mean, I pray every day for the people that give and support. God, let our gifts and talents come out to the fold. Bring us opportunities and contracts and divine connections, the right people.”
