Watch the Trailer for Netflix's 'All Day and a Night' Starring Jeffrey Wright and Ashton Sanders

The drama will hit the streaming service on May 1.

Netflix has released the first trailer for All Day and a Night, generational crime drama directed by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole.

The film stars Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) as Jahkor Abraham Lincoln, a soft-spoken aspiring rapper who struggles to survive amid an Oakland gang war. Though he tried his best to break the cycle of crime, a desperate Jahkor finds himself engaging in illegal activity that ultimately lands him behind bars. There, Jahkor comes face-to-face with his father, J.D. (Jeffrey Wright, Westworld), whom he never wanted to be like. Jahkor then embarks on a journey of self-discovery with the help of his dad.

"The film is tough by design, it asks a lot of the audience," Cole told Black Panther director Ryan Coogler in a recent interview. "But I think Jah’s journey is about finding hope in the one place he can control ,which is inside himself. On a certain level the film is about self-reliance in the face of insurmountable odds and I think a lot of people can relate to that. What I didn’t want to do, though, was create false hope. I wanted to make the movie as grounded and as realistic as I could and have that hope feel real to the world that it exists in."

A Day and a Night hits Netflix on May 1. The film co-stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Isaiah John, Kelly Jenrette, Shakira Ja'Nai Paye, and Christopher Meyer.
