With all the coverage surrounding a North Charleston, South Carolina police officer being charged with murder for the caught-on-video shooting of an unarmed black man in 2011, you may have missed news that a different member of South Carolina's police force was arrested the same day for a shooting that killed another unarmed black man in 2014.
North Augusta officer Justin Craven was was arrested and charged with discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle, a felony carrying a sentence of up to 10 years, according to a news release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Craven was responding to a DUI call in February of 2014 when he began a nine-mile pursuit of 68-year-old Ernest Satterwhite, all the way to Satterwhite's driveway, the Edgefield Daily reports. After Satterwhite parked, Craven fired repeatedly through door of his car. Satterwhite was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Prosecutors attempted to charge Craven with manslaughter at the time, but a Grand Jury downgraded that to a charge of misconduct in office, a misdemeanor, Buzzfeed reports.
An investigation by the state led to Craven's arrest on the new felony charge.
